10 Supernatural Villains Its New Series Must Revisit

The fan-favorite CW television series Supernatural concluded in November 2020. But now, almost exactly five years later, Supernatural is back. And this time, the series has a chance to revisit some of the greatest villains Sam and Dean Winchester ever faced.

Dynamite Entertainment is publishing an all-new Supernatural comic book series by writer Greg Pak and artist Eder Messias. The series takes place during the events of Season One, as Sam and Dean search for their missing father, John Winchester, while hunting monsters along the way.

The Supernatural comic will introduce new monsters for the Winchesters to put down (including the demonic Imp, which Sam and Dean defeated in the first issue). However, the fact that Supernatural is revisiting its own continuity from the beginning creates an intriguing possibility.

If the Supernatural comic continues all the way through to the end, it may revisit some familiar villains, including those that may not have received the screen time they deserved the first time. Here are 10 evil monsters, demons, and gods that Supernatural needs to bring back!

The Wendigo

The Wendigo is one of the first monsters Sam and Dean hunt on-screen in Supernatural, as it is the antagonist of the second episode of Season One. But what makes it stand out the most is that it’s the only Wendigo Sam and Dean ever encountered.

In future episodes, however, Sam and Dean reference how ‘easy’ things used to be when they were taking down Wendigos, implying they’ve faced more than just the one from episode two. Now, Supernatural has the chance to show fans those encounters while allowing them to relive this early battle.

The Scarecrow

Supernatural, Season One, Episode 11, featured the Winchesters fighting a murderous Scarecrow. It’s safe to say that this episode gives off the most ‘Halloween vibe’ of any other in the series, making it a fan favorite. However, there’s something even more special about it that makes it worthy of revisiting.

Sam and Dean weren’t just fighting a Scarecrow, but rather a pagan god that demanded an annual sacrifice. By the end of the series, Sam and Dean are no strangers to fighting divine entities. But defeating one so early in their careers is a significant accomplishment that deserves more recognition.

Perhaps the Supernatural comic could delve deeper into the lore of this pagan god leading up to the events of that episode. Or, maybe the Scarecrow could come back in some way. No matter what, it’s clear that the Scarecrow should make its Supernatural return.

Azazel, aka The Yellow-Eyed Demon

The Yellow-Eyed Demon (later revealed to be named Azazel) was the first main antagonist in Supernatural. It was Azazel who infected Sam with demon blood, it was Azazel who killed Sam and Dean’s mother, and it was Azazel who damned John Winchester’s soul to hell.

Dean murdered Azazel with the Colt at the end of Season Two. Still, now that the series is revisiting the events of Season One in the Supernatural comic, it makes sense that the Yellow-Eyed Demon would return to terrorize the Winchester boys in ways fans haven’t seen before.

7

Bela Talbot

It might be unfair to classify Bela as a ‘villain’, as she helped Sam and Dean almost as much as she hurt them. However, if she had gotten her way, Bela would have sold out the Winchesters to Lilith to save her own soul, placing her in the ‘villains’ category.

If the Supernatural comic book series continues past the events of Season One and into those of Season Three, then it’s almost a no-brainer that Bela should make a comeback. She was a constant thorn in the brothers’ side, and their dynamic was too amazing to be gone forever.

6

Gordon Walker

Gordon Walker was a hunter who believed Sam was the antichrist and that he needed to be killed. The storyline of Gordon hunting Sam came to a fantastic conclusion with Gordon becoming a vampire, making him a monster Sam and Dean could kill without remorse. However, there’s room for more.

Sam killed Gordon in the same episode that saw Gordon become a vampire. However, if the Supernatural comic wanted to tweak the lore slightly, it could prolong Gordon’s time as a vampire, thereby giving Sam and Dean a truly terrifying adversary beyond angels and demons.

5

Doc Benton

Doc Benton was a doctor in the early 1800s who discovered the secret to immortality. It required him to replace his body parts regularly, but to do that, he had to extract them from the living, making him a serial killer who had become an immortal zombie.

Interestingly, a previous Supernatural comic book (Supernatural: Origins) detailed the fight Doc Benton had with John Winchester. Therefore, Doc Benton’s character is no stranger to the comic book landscape, making him a perfect candidate to return in this new series.

4

Alastair

Christopher Heyerdahl as Alastair in Supernatural.

Alastair was a demon in Supernatural Season Four who operated as perhaps the most powerful agent of Lilith. His time on the show was shamefully short, especially given Alastair’s relationship with Dean Winchester.

When Dean was in hell, Alastair was the demon who tortured him. Not only that, but Alastair successfully turned Dean from a victim of hell’s torture into a torturer himself, thereby corrupting Dean’s soul.

If the Supernatural comic book brings Alastair back, it would be interesting to see his time with Dean in hell, further exploring their twisted relationship.

3

Eve, aka Mother of All

Julia Maxwell as Eve rising from a stony pit in Supernatural.

Eve, aka The Mother of All, is a rare example of a villain who was utterly wasted in Supernatural. Eve was the mother of monsters, and she made it her mission to turn every human on Earth into a hybridized creature stemming from the likes of vampires, werewolves, and skinwalkers.

By all counts, Eve could have been a season-defining villain. But, instead, she was merely a tool used to further the plot revolving around the angels and demons, even though the angels and demons had been hogging the spotlight in practically every previous season.

If the new Supernatural comic continues into the events of Season Six, then it can further explore Eve’s schemes, making her a more serious threat than she was in the show.

2

Soulless Sam

Jared Padalecki as Sam Winchester in Supernatural.

Sam Winchester is one of the greatest heroes in Supernatural canon (matched only by his brother, Dean). However, there was a time when Sam was a villain. After Sam was resurrected from hell, only his body came back to life. His soul was still trapped in the pit with Lucifer.

Since he no longer had a soul, Sam became a heartless (yet effective) hunter. He wouldn’t devolve into villainy until he tried to kill Bobby to complete a spell that would keep his soul out of his body forever.

Soulless Sam roamed the Earth for more than a year before his soul was returned to him, and fans of the show only got to see a small portion of that. That means the comic series is free to explore Soulless Sam to the fullest extent.

1

Demon Dean

Similar to Soulless Sam, Demon Dean is a version of the heroic Dean Winchester who went bad. After his resurrection following his acceptance of the Mark of Cain, Dean became a demon. He was aggressive, violent, and generally evil without a shred of remorse.

Unfortunately, like Soulless Sam, Demon Dean was incredibly short-lived on the screen. But, since Supernatural is effectively retracing its steps in the comics, now is the perfect time to bring this villain (and all the others on this list) back to the series!
