The filming may be reaching its end, but fans are still clueless about what to expect from the story of Avengers: Doomsday. Thankfully, a scoop by industry insider Daniel Ritchman (via X @DanielRPK) claims that Robert Downey Jr. is on a manhunt for 5 superheroes in the upcoming film.
The 5 superheroes in question here are Steve Rogers’ Captain America, Doctor Strange, Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, Scarlet Witch, and, surprisingly, Tom Hardy‘s Venom. And when you look at what happened in the comics of Secret Wars (2015), you might start to understand where they are going with this, even realising Doctor Doom in a new light.

The Following Information Might Contain Spoilers For The Upcoming Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars Movies By Marvel Studios. Readers’ Discretion Is Advised.
The Secret Wars Storyline From Marvel Comics Explains Avengers: Doomsday

The progression of the MCU throughout Phase 5, and now, Phase 6, has already hinted at the adaptation of the Secret Wars storyline from Marvel’s 2015 crossover event, which, intentionally, is also Phase 6’s last film.

But unlike the Molecule Man, who is the herald of The Beyonder, it seems like Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom is trying to stop a multiversal imbalance from occurring. As witnessed in the MCU, ever since Doctor Strange, Spider-Man, and Scarlet Witch meddled with the laws of the multiverse, incursions of beings and variants from other universes started.
And with Steve Rogers altering the timeline and changing his life events in Avengers: Endgame by traveling back in time, these superheroes may have caused the multiverse to shift in a direction that it shouldn’t have. Therefore, the festering concoction of imbalance may be reaching a tipping point, which can potentially cause a multiversal collapse.
In Secret Wars, to stop the collapse, Doom does everything in his power to stop these incursions, but inevitably causes even more of them, and on a bigger scale. Therefore, he creates a unified stream of time that he calls Battleworld, which keeps the Multiverse stable.
This might be the end goal that Doom seeks to stabilize the MCU Multiverse, which is why he was looking for Franklin Richards in The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
How the Incursion Theory Paints Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom in a Positive Light
If the above theory is true, then we can safely assume that Downey Jr. is actively trying to save reality itself, which means he’s not a full-on dark foe, but a morally resolute antagonist that is taking the pragmatic approach. If the fate of 5 individuals can be changed to save reality, it’s pennies to pay in comparison.
And with Franklin Richards’ god-like powers of reality manipulation, the timestreams and the Multiverse can be reshaped into a stable reality of relative peace. But we also have to keep in mind Doom’s conquisitive tendencies, which may make him the supreme overseer of this unified multiverse.
If this is what we will be getting in the future, then it would make Doom a hero, although not to the one we want, but the one we need.
