It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia just featured a strange callback to Danny DeVito’s $801 million sci-fi film from 2019. Danny DeVito has appeared in films and TV shows for nearly six decades, and while young audiences primarily recognize him from the It’s Always Sunny cast, he has over 150 acting credits.
It’s Always Sunny season 17 opens with the second part of its Abbott Elementary crossover, but the second episode is back to business as usual. The episode sees the Gang reacting to Frank’s potential death when the eldest member finds himself in a coma. Despite the dark premise, there’s plenty of humor as always.

The Two Reunited In It’s Always Sunny Season 17
Alex Wolff is an American actor who can be recognized for his roles in films like Hereditary, Oppenheimer, and Pig, all of which were widely acclaimed. He made a cameo in It’s Always Sunny season 17, episode 2 as Simon, the “businessman” who supports the Gang’s ideas to franchise Paddy’s Pub, convincing them he’ll invest.

Reflecting on twenty years of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, creator and star Rob McElhenney shared which joke he thinks has grown in value.
Funnily enough, Wolff previously co-starred with Danny DeVito in Jumanji: The Next Level, where he played DeVito’s grandson. Wolff plays college student Spencer Gilpin while DeVito plays Eddie Gilpin, a man who previously owned a diner with Danny Glover’s character. Both are relatively minor roles, but they’re fun parts of the movie.
Alex Wolff proves to be a hilarious cameo actor in It’s Always Sunny season 17. His character is so unhinged that he actually manages to throw the Gang for a loop, a rare feat among the numerous guests whose lives they’ve ruined. Simon ends up passing out in a crack house and is left there, but it was his actions that got him there.
Alex Wolff’s It’s Always Sunny Cameo Disappointingly Didn’t Include Any Scenes With Danny DeVito
Will Simon Return In It’s Always Sunny Season 17?
While it would have been fun to see these two actors share a scene together, Wolff’s character didn’t actually have any scenes with DeVito. As per the title (“Frank Is in a Coma”), Frank was, in fact, in a coma for the majority of its runtime, while Dennis, Charlie, and Mac were the ones who ran off on an adventure.

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is returning for season 17, and one star reveals which stories they were hesitant to include in the new season.
Given Frank’s history with various facets of the industry, including running sweatshops and dealing with terrorist organizations, having him interact with a young gun like Simon would have been hilarious, especially if they disagreed on franchising Paddy’s. Frank is ultimately the character who gets the last laugh in the episode, but he misses most of the action.
There are still six episodes to go in It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia season 17, so with Simon being left behind, there’s plenty of time for a potential return. It’s rare that cameo characters from famous actors return, but anything is possible in the FX sitcom.
