'Dexter: Resurrection' Revives Iconic Franchise With Record Breaking Series Premiere

Dexter Morgan may have taken a bullet and had his heart stop, but that didn’t stop him from staging a heartstopping comeback of his own. Dexter: Resurrection has delivered Showtime’s most-watched and most-streamed premiere ever — and that’s not hyperbole. It’s a resurrection in more ways than one. According to Chris McCarthy, Co-CEO of Paramount Global and President of Showtime/MTV Entertainment, the numbers speak for themselves:

Dexter: Resurrection delivered an electrifying performance that not only rekindled a fiercely devoted fanbase but also captivated a new generation of viewers — shattering records with Showtime’s most-streamed premiere ever. This triumph underscores the lasting impact of this iconic franchise, brought to life by Michael C. Hall’s unparalleled portrayal and Clyde Phillips’ visionary creative leadership.”

The premiere episode pulled in 3.1 million global cross-platform viewers, a stunning +46% increase over the debut of Dexter: Original Sin and a +79% leap from Dexter: New Blood. It also officially holds the title of the #1 most streamed premiere in Showtime history. If you needed proof that audiences still have an appetite for this dark and twisted antihero, look no further.

Even on social media, Dexter: Resurrection has carved out a bloody big footprint. Compared to Original Sin, social video views skyrocketed +150% to 43 million, while engagements soared +67% to 2.5 million. Since the premiere, overall franchise consumption on Paramount+ is up a staggering +132%, proving that old fans are revisiting the classics while new ones are joining the kill table.

What Is ‘Dexter: Resurrection’ About?

Set weeks after the shocking finale of Dexter: New Blood, Resurrection picks up with Dexter awakening from a coma after being shot by his son Harrison (played by Jack Alcott). With Harrison gone and no closure in sight, Dexter travels to New York City to track him down and repair the damage — but the past refuses to stay buried. Complicating matters further? The arrival of Miami Metro’s Angel Batista (played by returning fan-favorite David Zayas) and a flood of old ghosts, including Dexter’s father Harry Morgan (once again portrayed by James Remar).

The series is showrun by Clyde Phillips, who previously helped guide the original series to critical acclaim. He’s joined by fellow executive producers Michael C. Hall, Scott Reynolds, Tony Hernandez, Lilly Burns, and Marcos Siega. Directors for the season include Monica Raymund (Original Sin) and Marcos Siega, who directs six of the ten episodes.

Dexter: Resurrection airs Sundays on Showtime.
