X-Men's New Recruit Steals Hearts with Touching Family Moment

Warning: Contains Potential Spoilers for Uncanny X-Men #19!

One of the X-Men’s newest recruits is making a memorable impression on readers and winning hearts. With just one sentence, they may have been officially solidified as the team’s fan-favorite. The sweet standout moment for the relatively fresh Marvel Comics character is a touching reminder that the mutant heroes of the X-Men are strongest as one great big chosen family.

Marvel’s preview for Uncanny X-Men #19, written by Gail Simone and drawn by David Marquez, sees the team’s Outliers going about their morning at the Haven House. However, Ransom sends Deathdream into a seriously endearing frenzy.

When Ransom offers to take Deathdream under his wing, saying that they’re family, Hotoru has a moving and emotional reaction: “I’m somebody’s little brother”.

When four young new mutants stumbled into the Haven House and onto Rogue’s Louisiana X-Men lineup, they didn’t even know each other that well. Yet still, the Outliers have officially become family to one another. Though they all have rough upbringings and issues within their biological families, the teen mutants have really established a close bond as the X-Men’s next generation.

Hotoru’s ghastly death-based mutant powers make him one of the more strange additions to the franchise, but his previewed moment with Ransom in Uncanny X-Men #19 is both heartwarming and relatable. Despite their fantastical abilities, all these young mutants want are loved ones and a place to belong, and Deathdream finally has that with his fellow Outliers at Haven House.

There aren’t many details about Hotoru’s bleak past, but it’s known that he died several times when he was born and communicated with his mother after her death. Despite his tragic backstory, Deathdream now has a home where he can be a younger brother nurtured by his mutant mentors, and he even has a Sentinel dog that loves him, too.

But What’s Coming in Ransom and Deathdream’s Future?

As Ransom becomes a big brother figure to Deathdream, it’ll be fascinating to see how their bond develops over Marvel Comics’ future. Although Ransom has appeared in the Age of Revelation previews, Deathdream’s role in the future timeline is still a mystery. With the heroes forming a family, readers will want to know how their brotherly relationship develops over time.

Ransom and Deathdream could be a fan-favorite duo moving forward, and readers will see the brothers working together as they go up against Deadpool and Outlaw in the upcoming issue. Although Deathdream has been a curious addition to the X-Men since debuting last year, his uplifting reaction to finding his chosen family makes him one of their best new heroes.

Uncanny X-Men #19 will be available August 6, 2025, from Marvel Comics!
