HBO’s The Comeback has certainly earned its title, officially returning for a third season after an 11-year delay, but it also has a shot at an epic cast reunion. Production on Lisa Kudrow’s long-awaited revival of her hit series began this summer, for an anticipated release date of 2026.
The Comeback follows veteran B-list actor Valerie Cherish, who, after landing a sitcom role, agrees to have her life documented on a reality TV show. At the time of its initial release back in 2005, critics were hesitant about the series, feeling its somber look into the life of the “fading Hollywood actress” was much too poignant for a sitcom.
However, despite the critics’ initial concerns, Kudrow is back yet again for The Comeback season 3, and it might be the optimal opportunity to fulfill a destiny that her previous show managed to achieve.
The Comeback Season 3 Can Finally Include A Lisa Kudrow Friends Reunion
Lisa Kudrow’s Series Must Follow A Previous Tradition In Its Third Season
Lisa Kudrow is known for featuring her previous co-stars, meaning The Comeback season 3 could be the perfect opportunity to keep the tradition alive by reuniting Friends cast members. The ending of season 2 saw significant growth for Kudrow’s character as she left the Emmy Awards to join her best friend, Mickey, at the hospital.
Now, for season 3, Valerie returns to the entertainment industry with a new show, but isn’t too thrilled about promoting it. Considering the widely successful HBO Friends reunion was produced by HBO, like The Comeback, it’s the perfect opportunity to feature guest appearances by Kudrow’s Friends co-stars.
Lisa Kudrow Already Reunited With Her Friends Co-Stars In A Different Comedy Series
Web Therapy Featured Every Single Friends Star, Except For One
Lisa Kudrow’s partially-improvised, much more light-hearted comedy series, Web Therapy, featured almost every single member of the Friends cast, aside from Jennifer Aniston. Matthew Perry, Matt LeBlanc, David Schwimmer, and Courteney Cox all appeared in at least two episodes of the Showtime series.
While The Comeback may be ending with its third season, it could truly make history with the inclusion of Kudrow’s former castmates. While there haven’t been too many details shared regarding season 3’s plot or its potential Friends cameos, Amy Gravitt, the EVP of HBO and Max comedy, provided a statement following season 3’s announcement (via Variety):
“No matter what the industry throws at her, Valerie Cherish is a survivor. On the 20th Anniversary of her debut, Michael Patrick King and Lisa Kudrow have brilliantly scripted her return to HBO and we can’t wait to see that.”
Co-produced by Sex and the City’s Michael Patrick King, The Comeback’s return will no doubt make waves. While the former Friends actress certainly needs no help captivating an audience, the return of her beloved fellow castmates, especially following the heartbreaking passing of Kudrow’s personal friend and former co-star, Matthew Perry, could give The Comeback an extra dose of nostalgia.
