Speaking on his YouTube show Wong Jing Looks at the Entertainment World with his daughter Wong Zihan, the veteran filmmaker revealed that the couple’s split stemmed primarily from incompatible personalities.
From Romance to Marriage
Nicholas Tse first gained public attention for his high-profile romance with singer Faye Wong in the early 2000s. However, their relationship lasted only two years, as Wong Jing noted, “At the time, both were too young and not mature enough to sustain their love.”
Soon after, Nicholas met Cecilia Cheung on the set of Old Master Q (2001). Their friendship gradually grew into romance, and they eventually married, welcoming two sons together.
Wong Jing recalled that Cecilia showed great affection for Nicholas in the early days: “When Nicholas injured his finger during filming, Cecilia would personally apply medicine on him every night.”
Growing Tensions After Marriage
However, things changed after their wedding. While working with Cecilia on Treasure Hunt (2011), Wong Jing noticed signs of strain in their marriage. On set, Cecilia acted like a devoted mother to her children but often scolded Nicholas in front of others.
“Hearing her constant complaints, I felt she had a lot of resentment. Saying such things openly made me realize their marriage wouldn’t last,” Wong Jing explained.
As predicted, the couple divorced later that same year, before the movie’s release. Wong Jing admitted that he never shared these observations publicly until now.
Interestingly, he also revealed that he avoided casting Nicholas as Cecilia’s husband in the movie, choosing actor Ekin Cheng instead, because of the visible marital tension on set.
Life After Divorce
Contrary to public belief, Wong Jing insisted that the infamous Edison Chen photo scandal involving Cecilia Cheung was not the cause of the divorce. Instead, he emphasized that their clashing personalities and inability to resolve differences were the true reasons for their separation.
Despite parting ways, Nicholas Tse and Cecilia Cheung have maintained a relatively amicable relationship, avoiding public mudslinging.
Cecilia has remained a devoted single mother, though she surprised fans in 2018 by announcing the birth of her third son — whose father’s identity remains a mystery.
Nicholas, meanwhile, rekindled his romance with Faye Wong in 2014. The couple continues to live together but have chosen not to marry.
