Amanda Knox, an American exchange student in Perugia, Italy, faced conviction in 2009 for murdering her roommate, Meredith Kercher, and received a 26-year prison sentence.
Authorities also convicted her then-boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito. In 2011, an appeals court overturned their convictions after experts raised concerns about contaminated evidence, and Knox returned to the United States after serving four years (via The New York Times).
