Arcane features intriguing characters, from the volatile Jinx to the brilliant Heimerdinger, but there’s an addition to the Netflix animated series’ cast that ended up playing a bigger role than what was originally planned for them. With a 100% Rotten Tomatoes score, Arcane has been hailed as not only one of Netflix’s best shows but a revolutionary series that changed the video game adaptation scene.
Arcane does a lot of things exceptionally well, from its perfect soundtrack to its excellently choreographed action scenes and incredible world-building. But it’s Arcane’s characters that truly elevate the fantasy series. The animated show draws its lore, characters, and magical system from League of Legends. While the impact of the video game can be seen throughout the series, that’s where the similarities between the two end.
The TV adaptation of League of Legends carefully developed its characters and added intriguing backstories. While some, like Jinx, Vi, and Caitlyn, were destined to play bigger roles in the Netflix fantasy series, others, one of which became a fan-favorite, could have had a shorter story arc.
Isha’s Story Originally Wasn’t Supposed To Be A Huge Part Of Arcane Season 2
Arcane was brought to life by an incredibly talented creative team, which included Alex Yee, the show’s co-creator, executive producer, and screenwriter, and Amanda Overton, the series’ screenwriter and co-executive producer. While speaking to Collider, Yee and Overton divulged some interesting background information about Isha, a character who joined Arcane’s cast in the second installment of the series.
Some storylines, like Mel and Ekko’s, came easily to Arcane’s creators; however, Isha’s was a tough nut to crack because of how she would fit into the show’s overall narrative. During the early stages of Arcane season 2, the creative minds behind the show wanted to include a character that Jinx would have a relationship with, which is how Isha came to be.
There will be new additions to the Arcane franchise.
For any character to exist, they needed to have a compelling reason, and for Isha, it was to be Jinx’s companion. According to Yee and Overton, Isha gave Jinx a chance to have a little sister. She was an important part of not only Jinx’s story arc, but season 2 as well, because of how her storyline tied back to family dynamics in the series.
It’s Difficult To Imagine Arcane Without Isha In Hindsight
While Isha wasn’t meant to have such an instrumental role in Arcane, it’s difficult to imagine how the story would have panned out without her. The character added some heartwarming moments to the fantasy series, whether it was how she trailed after Jinx or the wide-eyed admiration she had for her.
Perhaps the reason Isha is so memorable is the effect she had on Jinx. After Silco and Vander’s deaths and the breakdown of her and Vi’s relationship, Jinx had no family. Isha brought out the best in Jinx and reminded her that she was once Powder. Jinx, who at that point cared only about herself, learnt once again what it was like to have someone to love.
Jinx’s protectiveness towards her found little sister was extremely emotional, and Isha’s loyalty to Jinx was one of the most inspiring things about Arcane’s second run. If Isha hadn’t come into Jinx’s life, who knows if she would have turned a new leaf or if she would have continued on her path of distraction. The sweet little girl ended up becoming a fan-favorite, and deservedly so.
Arcane’s Creators Are Right: Isha’s Arc Fit Perfectly Into Jinx & Vi’s Story
Vi and Jinx’s relationship is a significant part of Arcane, because, at its core, the show is about two sisters who were once close and how they lost each other. Isha’s story arc created an opportunity for Jinx to understand why Vi made the choices she did because the roles were reversed.
Jinx learned what it was like to be responsible for a person, and in a way, that led to her letting go of the resentment she had toward her elder sister. All Vi ever wanted was to protect Jinx, but she stifled her, which ultimately led to the former going to the dark side. Isha undoubtedly softened Jinx, but she also helped heal the relationship between the two sisters.
In Arcane season 1, Vi was always quick to shield Jinx from danger, instead of letting her learn from her own experiences. In season 2 of the series, Vi had to let go of the idea of who she thought her sister should be and instead let her become her own person by accepting her choices, whether good or bad.
Because of Isha, Jinx, and Vi’s relationship, which the two maybe thought would never get fixed, they got a fighting chance. Isha’s inclusion in Arcane season 2 ultimately goes back to the show’s most important relationship. Without Isha, it’s impossible to know if Jinx and Vi would have found their way back to each other, because they were at a point where they couldn’t find common ground.
