Widely regarded as one of the finest performances of the 21st century, Denzel Washington‘s turn as the mean-spirited Detective Alonzo Harris in Training Day is a masterclass in acting, one that many budding young performers simply must watch. Starring alongside Ethan Hawke in the 2001 crime thriller, Washington verbally berates and threatens his way to an Oscar for his trouble, cementing his performance as one of the greatest to be heralded by the Academy.
Now, 24 years later, you can catch this awe-inspiring performance on a brand-new streamer. As of September 1, 2025, Training Day will be available to stream on Starz in the U.S., joining a number of exciting new arrivals on the platform. This includes the likes of Cillian Murphy‘s underrated Red Eye, the 2008 comedy Role Models, The Man With the Iron Fists starring Russell Crowe, Tom Hanks‘ brilliant Apollo 13, Matt Damon‘s box office hit Elysium, and much more. These films will join TV series like Starz’s ongoing Outlander prequel, Blood of My Blood. For those who have, for some reason, not yet seen Training Day, here’s a look at the synopsis:
“Police drama about a veteran officer who escorts a rookie on his first day with the LAPD’s tough inner-city narcotics unit. Training Day is a blistering action drama that asks the audience to decide what is necessary, what is heroic and what crosses the line in the harrowing gray zone of fighting urban crime. Does law-abiding law enforcement come at the expense of justice and public safety? If so, do we demand safe streets at any cost?”
Was ‘Training Day’ a Box Office Hit?
We all know just how well-received Training Day was by critics, receiving recognition by the Academy and holding a 74% score on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, but how did it perform at the box office? Produced for a reported $45 million, the movie proved mildly successful, turning in a global haul of just over $100 million, from $76 million in domestic revenue and $28 million coming from overseas markets. Finishing as one of the 40 highest-grossing movies of 2001 globally, the film was a fair success in a relatively mixed box-office career for Washington at the time, one that would soon find its most lucrative hit yet with 2007’s American Gangster, the biopic about the life of Harlem drug lord Frank Lucas.
Training Day is available to stream on Starz starting September 1.
