Danny Boyle’s 28 Years Later was all anyone could talk about when the film was released back in June. The next question on everyone’s mind was when the film would get a streaming release.
Well, it seems that the gods of the Bone Temple have heard your prayers since the film has been confirmed to release on Netflix. According to a report, the film is slated to release on September 20 for a worldwide streaming debut on Netflix.

The news comes after the recent trailer release of a spin-off of 28 Years Later titled 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple. Although the trilogy is one of the greatest movies ever made, fans weren’t too happy about 28 Years Later when it was originally released.

28 Years Later‘s Genius Was Refusing Fan Service
In a world where every major box office hit has a callback or an overarching cinematic universe that is connected to everything around it, 28 Years Later chose to be different.
The film had no callbacks, and even if they did, it wasn’t exaggerated to the point where the nostalgia was put front and center of the screen. Sure, there were references and easter eggs, but they were kept so hidden that only eagle-eyed fans of the franchise could spot them.
Writer Alex Garland and Danny Boyle simply threw the nostalgia factor out the window and created a brand new story, which was set within the universe of the 28 franchise. However, the director-writer duo made sure not to tie it all up quite quickly and, much like Boyle’s films, created a slow-burning experience for his devoted fans.
Upon the film’s premiere, 28 Years Later received mixed reviews from hardcore fans and newcomers to the franchise. With the movie being overhyped, the fandom was muddied with people expecting an action/slasher flick. The mixed reviews might seem to hint at a certain problem that the film will eventually have… on Netflix.
How 28 Years Later‘s Controversial Take Might Affect Netflix

With mixed reviews and a choice to refuse nostalgia and callback to fans, 28 Years Later became somewhat messy with the inclusion of fans of the OG movies as well as the newer fans.
Considering that most OG fans have already watched the film in theaters (because Danny Boyle, of course), it seems that 28 Years Later might just be hidden under a pile of other Netflix shows and movies.
Of course, with the hate that 28 Years Later has received, it could also be a possibility that it might affect Netflix, too. There was a backlash against the film’s release because fans simply felt that the plot could have been avoided if the characters had used their brains.
Naturally, the reception for the film was great with critics, but it didn’t work out too much for fans of the franchise.
