Kentaro Miura's Last Manga, Dur-an-ki, Finally Gets English Release

Few names in manga carry the same weight as Kentaro Miura, the visionary artist behind Berserk. His death in 2021 left fans devastated, not only because his magnum opus remains unfinished, but also because of the sudden end of his creative journey. Now, years later, readers are about to experience his final work, Dur-an-ki, in English for the very first time.

Earlier this year, Dark Horse Comics confirmed the long-awaited news, that Miura’s last manga would officially be released in North America. With the release date now set for September 23, 2025, anticipation has only grown. To fuel excitement, the publisher recently shared an exclusive eight-page preview, giving fans their first look at a story that blends divine myth with human imagination.

A Departure From Berserk’s Darkness

Unlike Berserk, which is infamous for its brutal depictions of war and despair, Dur-an-ki takes a more mythical and mysterious approach. The story centers on Usumgal, a child of the gods born without a fixed identity, neither fully human nor divine, and neither male nor female. This being’s inventive spirit allows them to solve problems in ways no one else can.

The narrative sees Usumgal descending from a holy mountain to mingle with humanity, encountering new companions while shaping their destiny through innovation and wonder. Rather than drawing from a darker fantasy version of medieval Europe like Berserk, Miura leaned on Mesopotamian and Greco-Roman influences, crafting a world steeped in ancient myth and symbolism. The result is a manga that stands apart from his earlier work while still bearing his unmistakable artistic touch.

Dark Horse’s edition will not just reprint the original chapters. The English release will be packaged as a single paperback volume, featuring bonus materials including Miura’s plot notes and early character sketches. For longtime fans, these additions provide a glimpse into his creative process, highlighting the depth of thought he brought to even unfinished projects.

Miura’s Enduring Legacy Beyond Berserk

Dur-an-ki was initially serialized in Young Animal Zero magazine in 2019, but following Miura’s untimely passing, his studio, Gaga, halted the project. While short-lived, the manga has carried special significance as the last series Miura personally oversaw. Its delayed English release ensures that his vision reaches a wider audience, offering closure to fans who longed for one more story from the master.

Meanwhile, Miura’s presence continues to be felt through Berserk. Under the guidance of his close friend Koji Mori, Studio Gaga has continued the series, releasing twelve new chapters since 2021. With Volume 43 debuting in Japan this past August, international readers eagerly await its translated release, expected in 2026. Though Berserk remains incomplete, Mori’s stewardship honors Miura’s legacy while keeping his most famous world alive.

Beyond Berserk, Miura’s influence has also shaped Mori’s own original work. His manga D. Diver was launched in 2023 and was inspired by conversations with Miura about heroes who transform. Mori himself has described it as a kind of keepsake from their friendship. While no English release has been announced yet, the series stands as another reminder of Miura’s creative impact extending far beyond his own pen.

With Dur-an-ki arriving in bookstores this fall, fans will finally be able to hold Miura’s last completed project in their hands. It may not rival the sprawling saga of Berserk, but it offers something just as valuable, and a final look at the imagination of one of manga’s greatest storytellers.
