Kaiju No. 8 Season 2 Episode 9 Review: Kaiju No. 9 Finally Makes His Deadly Move

Spoiler Alert !!!

This article contains spoilers for Kaiju No. 8 Season 2 Episode 9.

Some episodes prepare you for war, and then there are episodes like this one, where the calm before the storm is louder than the battle itself. Episode 9 of Kaiju No. 8 Season 2 made me feel both comforted and uneasy at the same time, which was certainly unique. The entire plot of the latest installment carries a calm tone, yet it hides the storm that’s about to hit in the form of Kaiju No. 9.

What stood out the most for me was how emotionally human it all felt, especially for Kafka Hibino, as he finally got to hear some comforting words from his friends, including Mina. It was a touching moment, but it also made the weight on Kafka’s shoulders even heavier. He knows what’s coming, and the pressure of battling Kaiju No. 9 almost crushes him, which was quite evident from his expressions.

Words of Support That Weigh Heavy on Kafka

One of the most heartfelt parts for me in the entire Kaiju No. 8 episode was seeing Kafka finding out what his Division 3 friends thought about his secret. They comforted him not like soldiers but like people who truly care about him, which reflected their friendship and trust in Kafka’s actions, even though he has a Kaiju hidden inside him. It reminded me of the happy moments they shared in the first season of Kaiju No. 8.

I also liked how this comfort was carried forward by Mina Ashiro as she finally got a chance to talk with Kafka after a long time. Her approach of making Kafka believe that he is not alone in his fight was a nice touch to their bond, which has been one of the most underrated aspects of the entire series. However, instead of feeling light, Kafka felt more terrified about the upcoming clash with Kaiju No. 9. He knew that even though his friends supported him, the pressure to deal with Kaiju No. 9 would fall on him, and he would have to protect everyone.

His expressions showed me that he fully understands how much everyone is counting on him, and that only makes his doubts grow louder. Still, it added a humane touch to his journey, which will only elevate his development as the protagonist in the future. The question is no longer about his strength, but whether it will be enough to protect everyone, which, in my opinion, makes the Kaiju No. 8 story even more thrilling.

While Kafka struggles with his own fears, Kaiju No. 9 wastes no time making its move for the final battle. Suddenly, multiple kaijus appear in different places, which gave me an idea of what he is planning for the climax and how big of a threat it will be for the Defense Force. It feels chaotic and bone-chilling, which perfectly fits the style of Kaiju No. 9 as the main antagonist of the story. I am excited to see what his final rush will look like and how the Defense Force will deal with it.

The episode also focuses on how the Defense Force is preparing for retaliation, but it carries the undertone that they are still not ready for it. Everyone in the Defense Force seems to understand what’s at stake, which is why they are training harder, sharpening their skills, and pushing themselves to the limit. I felt the seriousness of the situation and the anticipation that comes with it for the final battle.

What added to the seriousness of the episode was the glimpse of Isao Shinomiya’s fading consciousness inside Kaiju No. 9. It made me feel sad to see his voice becoming weaker as he slowly disappeared. This showed how strong Kaiju No. 9 is becoming and what kind of threat his presence will bring once he enters the battlefield.

The entire Kaiju No. 8 episode felt like a perfect setup for the final clash between the Defense Force, backed by powerful soldiers like Kafka, Kikoru, Gen Narumi, and Mina, against Kaiju No. 9 and his unprecedented power. It has got me excited for the next installment, and hopefully, we will get to see some action next time.

Kaiju No. 8 is currently available to watch on Crunchyroll.
