Warning: SPOILERS ahead for Gen V season 2, episodes 1-3.Gen V season 2 finally answers The Boys spinoff’s very first question, but it’s still building towards the reunion needed to resolve this storyline. Although The Boys spinoff series has an incredible ensemble cast, the show’s primary focus is Marie Moreau.
Marie’s ability to control blood makes her a formidable opponent, but it also gives the series a tragic opening. Marie’s power manifests when she first gets her period, leading her to panic and accidentally kill her own parents. This is a major point of contention throughout her Gen V story, especially since it leads to her separation from her sister.
Gen V‘s very first scene shows Marie’s whole family, and she and her sister seem to have a tight-knit relationship. However, Marie doesn’t know where her sister is after her parents’ deaths, as the other girl doesn’t want to speak to her. This is the motivating force of Marie’s arc, and it’s the show’s earliest question. Now, we finally have a partial answer.
Gen V Season 2 Reveals What Happened To Marie’s Sister After Their Parents Died
Gen V‘s first season doesn’t offer concrete answers about the whereabouts of Marie’s sister, but season 2 finally tells us where Annabeth went after her parents’s deaths. In the hopes of learning about the mysterious Project Odessa at the center of season 2’s story, Marie visits her Aunt Pam and gets more than she bargained for.
Aunt Pam is a friend of Marie’s parents, and she clearly harbors resentment towards Marie over what happened to them. Therefore, it’s no surprise that she’s been keeping secrets from Gen V’s lead. While at Pam’s house, Marie discovers a bedroom full of her sister’s things. She quickly realizes her sister was staying with Pam for a while.
According to Pam, Annabeth doesn’t live with her anymore, but that’s where she went after their deaths — well, after a two-year stay in foster care, anyway. She seems to know where Annabeth is currently, but she’s unwilling to share that information. Her reason is both understandable and frustrating.
Why Aunt Pam Never Told Marie That Her Sister Was Staying With Her
Marie is understandably angry that Aunt Pam kept her sister’s whereabouts from her, but Pam’s explanation is equal parts reasonable and unfair. Annabeth clearly blames Marie for what happened to the rest of their family, and according to Pam, she doesn’t want to hear from her. And as frustrating as it is, she’s right that it’s ultimately “her choice.”
On the other hand, it’s clear that the people who loved Marie’s parents need a wake-up call when it comes to Marie’s part in their demise. With Pam looking at old photos with Marie, it’s obvious that a part of her knows that the girl isn’t really at fault for losing control of her powers. As Marie points out, she never asked for her ability.
And Marie’s powers have ruined her life as much as Annabeth’s or Pam’s, which makes Pam’s reasoning harder to swallow. Her own bias seems to prevent her from challenging Annabeth’s refusal to see her sister. Marie even calls her out on this, and Pam doesn’t give a satisfactory answer.
The two don’t end their visit on good terms, but it seems inevitable that Marie will hear from Aunt Pam or Annabeth in a later episode. After all the setup in season 1, a reunion between the Moreau sisters is inevitable to properly resolve this Gen V story.
Gen V Still Needs To Deliver On The Reunion The Boys Spinoff Is Building To
Although Gen V is finally addressing season 1’s Annabeth mystery, it still has more to do before this storyline is fully resolved. Hearing how Annabeth feels from Marie and Pam is one thing. However, viewers need an actual confrontation between the sisters to properly put this conflict to rest. Even if it doesn’t go in Marie’s favor, it;s the only way to end things.
Of course, it would be nice to see Annabeth acknowledge her sister’s grief and pain, rather than simply blaming hers on Marie. Things don’t always go so smoothly in The Boys universe, but it’s what Marie deserves. As Starlight notes during their conversation in the premiere, Marie is a good person.
The only way for Marie to see that is for her to forgive herself, and she’s going to need to deal with her complicated relationship with Annabeth to do that. Annabeth’s feelings are valid, too, and they’re another opportunity for The Boys spinoff to question whether superpowers are worth the damage and pain they so often cause.
With Gen V season 2 hinting that Pam knows where Annabeth is, it’s likely we’ll see a reunion between Marie and her sister before this outing is through. If not, it needs to happen in The Boys season 5. Perhaps helping defeat Homelander will change Annabeth’s mind about Marie, even after everything that happens at the start of Gen V.
