On September 22, Son Yeon-jae uploaded a video to her YouTube channel titled “Unplanned Hong Kong Trip Date With My Husband.” The clip showed the athlete marking her third wedding anniversary with her husband, a finance professional nine years her senior. The couple tied the knot in 2022, and welcomed a son in February 2024.
Son explained that the trip was unplanned as usual, even joking that her husband handled all the lunch and dinner reservations. Preparing for their evening date, she showcased her collection of luxury accessories: diamond rings worth between ₩10 million to ₩40 million, a bracelet valued at ₩18 million, and a necklace priced at nearly ₩8 million — items she later wore to dinner.
The couple dined at Caprice, a three-Michelin-starred restaurant in Hong Kong. During the meal, Son reflected, “We came here to celebrate our third anniversary. Where should we go next year?” To this, her husband replied, “By then, Jun-yeon will be older, so we’ll be able to go anywhere.”
Earlier this year, Son revealed she secretly purchased a luxury bag worth ₩4 million, admitting that even though she paid for it herself, she still felt guilty hiding it from her husband.
The former gymnast has also faced backlash in the past, with critics accusing her of “showing off wealth” on her channel. In August, her channel was briefly deleted before being restored, leading to speculation that mass reports by netizens may have caused the incident.
Son Yeon-jae is celebrated as one of Korea’s greatest rhythmic gymnasts. She placed 5th overall at the Finals at the 2012 London Olympics and 4th at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Most notably, she made history at the 2014 Incheon Asian Games by winning the nation’s first-ever gold medal in the individual all-around category.
