The Outer Worlds 2: Ultimate Builds Guide For Every Playstyle

The long-awaited follow-up to the hit Obsidian space adventure is finally here, and The Outer Worlds 2 is quickly becoming as popular as the original among players and critics alike. As players get started exploring Paradise Island and beyond, they’ll quickly learn there are countless ways to build a character and customize them based on preferred playstyles.

The Outer Worlds 2 offers players a classic Obsidian experience and an incredibly dynamic character creation system that can be tweaked to fit your preferences, whether that’s in terms of roleplay, combat, etc. The following builds are the best options for specific playstyles, with recommended backgrounds, traits, skills, perks, and gear.

Best Builds For All Playstyles In The Outer Worlds 2

The Outer Worlds 2 Builds Are Highly Customizable

Because of how The Outer Worlds 2‘s character design is structured, you’re encouraged to experiment with various perks, gear, and playstyles as you level up your character. While it isn’t necessary, it’s recommended to craft your build based off of your selected starting background, traits, and skills. As such, I’ve compiled a set of character build archetypes that can act as a jumping-off point for players.

The following builds are a work in progress, and updated details will be added as information becomes available.

Whether you decide to min/max particular skills or spread out your skill points to meet the needs of the moment, the below builds are meant to act as guidelines for each playstyle archetype. These are roleplay-based template builds that will give players a basic layout for how to approach gameplay depending on their preferred playstyle. Each build is intentionally open-ended and can be adjusted based on preferences/needs as you level up.

As a general note, the Sickly negative trait and the Brilliant trait are highly recommended for most first-timer builds. Sickly is the least cumbersome negative trait of the three options and is easy to overcome after your first few levels, while Brilliant will give you an additional starting skill and a leg up in the early game.

Best Weapons & Armor For All Builds In The Outer Worlds 2

Armor Mods & Specialized Weapons Can Be Adjusted To Playstyle Preferences

In terms of weapons and armor for the various archetype builds listed above, you will once again be able to adapt your choices based on your preferred playstyle. However, the following suggestions are highly recommended for each build, as the weapon and armor types synergize well with the selected perks above.

For armor, you’ll be able to customize your gear to a certain extent with armor mod slots, and you’ll find various armors and helmets with unique built-in mods that can take certain builds to the next level. Similarly, there are unique weapons throughout the game that can be utilized very effectively with most of the archetypes below.

Overall, when it comes to the specific gear and items you use with each build, work within these recommended options as a lose rule of thumb, equipping better and improved gear as you come across it in the later game. The weapon and armor types listed here will complement the designated playstyle, but you can easily equip alternative types just as effectively given you have the skills and perks to enhance them.

Best Strategy For All Builds In The Outer Worlds 2

Take Liberties With Your Build & Play It Your Way

Each of the above builds will get you started in the right direction no matter what your playstyle may be, and how you play and/or strategize each build is highly up to interpretation. Ideally, you’ll want to lean into the roleplay and gameplay focus of each archetype, such as the Kenny Rogers build for example, which is a cheeky build focused around Luck, Pistols, Sleight of Hand, and Speech skills.

While most of these builds are self-explanatory (i.e., Assassin, Gunslinger, Boomer), others such as the Poisoner build will require a nuanced strategy that incorporates corrosive effects from all different sources. Each of these top builds in The Outer Worlds 2 should be interpreted openly and customized to your desired setup, as this is one of the best features of the game’s loose progression systems.
