Colin Farrell recently recalled a particularly rough day on the set of the 2002 film, Minority Report, that left his co-star Tom Cruise unhappy. Appearing on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Farrell revealed that it was his birthday, and he did not want to film; however, he went anyway. This ended up being a terrible mistake because he was hungover from partying the night before, and it was tough working in such a condition.
Colin Farrell recalls Tom Cruise’s reaction to taking 46 takes for Minority Report scene
While speaking with Stephen Colbert, Farrell shared an incident from his time filming Minority Report with Tom Cruise when things didn’t go smoothly and Cruise “wasn’t very happy” with him. The trouble began on the day of his birthday, May 31, when he had asked production not to schedule him. However, they did schedule him, and that too at 6 AM. Even though he was not in the physical condition to work that day, Farrell decided to film anyway and called for “six Pacifico Carvezas and a packet of 20 Red.”
Calling it “one of the worst days I’ve ever had on a film set,” Farrell then acknowledged that it was a mistake for sure. He told the audience that after two years, he went to rehab, and it was not cool. However, at the moment, he had a couple of beers before the scene, and it was “terrible.” This ended up with him getting stuck on a particular line again and again with Tom Cruise.
The Penguin actor explained, “I will never forget the line I had that I couldn’t get out. It was, ‘I’m sure you’ve all grasped the fundamental paradox of pre-crime methodology.’ That was the line that started the scene. I remember [the crew] coming up and saying, ‘Do you want to go out and take a breath of fresh air?’”
He thought about going out for some air and having a reset, but decided against it, as that might have put more pressure on his return.
Farell added, “We did 46 takes. Tom wasn’t very happy with me. Tom, who I love, was not very happy!”
