Stranger Things season 5’s official trailer has debuted, featuring a shocking revelation that involves Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower) and Will Byers (Noah Schnapp). With Stranger Things season 4 ending in 2022, there has been a long wait for the fifth and final season of the beloved Netflix series.
Now, Netflix has released a new trailer, which begins with ominous shots of Vecna in the Upside Down, where he fittingly declares, “At long lost . . . we can begin” to a shadowy figure that looks strikingly similar to him. As the song “Who Wants to Live Forever” by Queen plays, Mike Wheeler (Finn Wolfhard) remarks that everyone in Hawkins is struggling after being quarantined by the military, and they need to unite so they can find and defeat Vecna for good.
Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) uses her powers to leap over a high fence and cautions Mike that this isn’t like one of his Dungeons & Dragons campaigns where he gets to write the ending. This harsh reality sets in as Nancy Wheeler (Natalia Dyer) and Dustin Henderson (Gaten Matarazzo) are seen sobbing, potentially in reaction to a major character’s death.
Dustin insists that he and the other characters stay true to each other and themselves as they face impossible odds. The trailer ends with numerous Demogorgons brutally attacking the military’s base and Vecna levitating a terrified Will, saying that he needs Will’s help “one last time.” Check out the trailer below:
While some of this footage has been included in previous trailers, much of it is new, including the game-changing final scene between Vecna and Will. This not only confirms that Will is instrumental to Vecna’s endgame, but the villain’s “one last time” line suggests that there is more to learn about the two characters’ history.
This could lead to confirmation of the theory that it was actually Vecna who kidnapped Will in season 1. Revealing this would shed more light on what actually happened to Will when he was trapped in the Upside Down, along with the true nature of his connection to Vecna and that parallel universe.
As for the figure that Vecna is seen talking to at the beginning of the trailer, this hints that there is still more to learn about the show’s true villain. From introducing the Mind Flayer in season 2 to Vecna in season 4, the series continues to recontextualize who is the ultimate antagonist.
Another important takeaway from the trailer are the glimpses of Eleven’s powers in Stranger Things season 5. From leaping over the fence to the massive wave of energy she seemingly sends blasts across Hawkins’ sky, she has never been more powerful. If Vecna successfully manipulates Will, though, Eleven may be forced to fight her friend.
One of Stranger Things biggest remaining mysteries, the fate of Max Mayfield (Sadie Sink), remains unclear, as the trailer shows her still unconscious as Lucas Sinclair (Caleb McLaughlin) carries her body while a Demodog chases them.
This trailer will likely be the last major tease before Stranger Things‘ final season debuts on Netflix. Anticipation has been building for years, and now it is time for the show to deliver its long-awaited ending.
Stranger Things season 5 kicks off with Volume 1 (four episodes) on November 26, followed by Volume 2 (three episodes) on December 25, and the series finale on December 31, all at 8pm ET/5pm PT.
