Diane Lane revealed that filming The Outsiders felt a little out of place for her. Speaking on The Drew Barrymore Show, the actress said that the 1983 film had so many young, rising male stars that it was thrilling but, at the same time, overwhelming for her.
Diane Lane says there was “too much testosterone for one girl” on The Outsider set
Diane Lane recalled her experience filming The Outsiders and said that it was both “hot” and “great.” However, she admitted that she sometimes kept to herself because it felt like too much. She said, “It was kind of… too much testosterone for one girl. So I kept to myself. But I was definitely pinching myself. I was definitely overwhelmed.” (via The Drew Barrymore Show)
The cast of The Outsiders included Tom Cruise, Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez, Ralph Macchio, C. Thomas Howell, Patrick Swayze, and Matt Dillon. Lane said that filming with them made her realize she liked men.
Diane Lane also recalled a memory from the set. She said, “I remember when we were at the movie theater and they were creating this windstorm. They had these big, huge fans, and they were throwing cocoa powder to make the dust so it wouldn’t be toxic or get in our eyes.”
She then joked about their ritual after finishing filming at night, saying that they would lick the cocoa off their hands. The actress laughed that they all looked “tan and delicious.”
Francis Ford Coppola, the director of The Outsiders, also spoke about what filming the movie was like all those years ago. He said that the young actors, including Tom Cruise and Diane Lane, were brought together, and while it could have been a tense situation, it instead created mutual respect.
He explained, “So while it could’ve been a volatile situation, it turned into a very positive one.”
