It was earlier stated by Matthew McConaughey that he would be happy to return for another season of True Detective if Woody Harrelson would also return to the project.
Being friends for more than two decades, Harrelson spoke on the 3rd Hour of Today about the possibility of returning for another season of True Detective and Matthew McConaughey’s comments.
Matthew’s so funny, but in fairness, never. Not a chance.
Harrelson continued,
Because it turned out great. I love that it turned out the way it did. If anything, doing another season would, I think, tarnish that.
Well, although McConaughey stated that he would return on the condition that Woody Harrelson would return, that’s not the only condition that McConaughey put forth.

Aside from the fact that he would want Woody Harrelson to return alongside him for another season of True Detective, Matthew McConaughey also revealed one more condition for his return.

During his talks with NME, McConaughey revealed that the script for the 5th season of True Detective should be iconic because whatever came from Rust Cohle’s mouth was “white-hot”.
There’s excitement, yes, but I haven’t seen a script yet. When I [originally] read True Detective, everything that came out of Rust Cohle’s mouth was white-hot. The script was on fire, so the execution [of a sequel] must go another step.
He continued,
We’re keen on the idea but it’s nothing more than an idea. If Nic puts something on paper that Woody and I think is good enough, it wouldn’t even be a choice. We would look at it and go, ‘it must happen’. It’s gotta be damn good though because we set a pretty good precedent!
Well, Woody Harrelson’s statements about not returning for another season put him at odds with Matthew McConaughey (much like their True Detective characters).
Can Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson Return to True Detective After Season 4 Connection?
In True Detective: Night Country, there was a brief connection mentioned about how the research center was supported by Tuttle United, a company mentioned (and often the central part) of Season 1 of True Detective.
The spiral symbol was also the symbol of the Yellow King’s cult, which was seen on the bodies of the men of Tsalal station. Naturally, Season 4 of the show was quite clearly connected to the first season of True Detective.
If a proper script is provided and show runner Nic Pizzolatto returns to serve it, there is a probability that Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson could return to their roles of Rust Cohle and Martin Hart for another season.
Of course, it remains speculation at this point, but fans of the show would want nothing more than the return of the two characters that started it all.
