HBO’s upcoming DC Universe show Lanterns has finally received an official update regarding its target release date from Warner Bros. Discovery. This comes a week after rumors about its potential delay started circulating online. A previous report suggested that the studio might be planning to launch the superhero show after Supergirl’s theatrical release. However, it looks like that won’t be the case after all.
“The series follows recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland,” reads the initial logline.
What is the new release date update for Lanterns?
In Warner Bros. Discovery’s latest letter to its shareholders, the company confirmed that Lanterns is currently scheduled to debut on HBO and HBO Max in early 2026, effectively debunking the recent rumors about its delay. It will officially serve as DC Studios’ third DCU series as part of its Chapter One: Gods and Monsters arc.
The ensemble cast includes Aaron Pierre as John Stewart and Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan. Kelly MacDonald as Kerry, Garret Dillahunt as William Macon, Poorna Jagannathan as Zoe, Ulrich Thomsen as Sinestro, Chris Coy as Waylon Sanders, Jasmine Cephas Jones as young Bernadette, Sherman Augustus as John Sr., J. Alphonse Nicholson as a young John Sr., Jason Ritter as Billy Macon, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Nicole Ari Parker as Bernadette, Sherman Augustus as John Sr. and more. Before the HBO show, Fillion’s Green Lantern first appeared in James Gunn’s Superman movie.
Lanterns is executive produced by showrunner Chris Mundy (True Detective: Night Country, Ozark), Damon Lindelof (The Leftovers, Watchmen), and Tom King (Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow), with the latter two also co-writing the series. According to Mundy, the show will take place in “a couple of different time periods.” The directing line-up consists of James Hawes, Stephen Williams, Geeta Vasant Patel, and Alik Sakharov.
