Pluribus: What Really Happened To Helen?

Warning! This article contains spoilers for Pluribus episode 2.The world has changed forever in Pluribus due to a global virus turning the population into a hive mind full of happy, smiling zombies, but not everyone survived this change, including Carol’s beloved partner Helen. After just two episodes, Apple TV’s sci-fi dystopian series from the creator of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul is already getting rave reviews.

Thus far, Rhea Seehorn’s Carol Sturka is the standout hero for the series, and unlike her fellow survivors, Carol has no one left to help her make sense of the apocalypse. While her peers around the world have family and friends that help them make the transition into this new world, Carol lost the person who means the most to her, Helen.

Pluribus Suggested That Helen Had A Reaction To The Virus

Pluribus episode 1 saw the virus spread, first slowly and in controlled environments, before it raced to consume the entire world at once. Amid the chaos, everyone who was infected appeared to have a reaction that caused something similar to tremors, before they entered what appeared to be a zombie-like state.

However, for Helen, her physical symptoms progressed differently than the rest of the people that Carol watched undergo this change. Helen froze completely in place, before her strength gave out and she dropped her phone. She then fell backwards on the ground, hard. Only then did she begin to convulse like the other infected individuals.

While Carol rushed to try and get help for Helen, she encountered many others all displaying the same tremor symptoms while standing in place. But, when she checked back on her partner, Helen’s eyes had dark red marks beneath them, and her movements had slowed to a stop, before she appeared to display a glimpse of clarity, smiling at Carol, and then passing away.

Whether this is a result of Helen having some sort of allergy to the virus that caused the change, or her seizing was just unfortunate enough to cause her to stumble and fatally fall is unclear, but it seems evident that her reaction was unusual.

Did Helen Die From Her Fall In Pluribus?

Now, Helen also fell hard on the ground outside the bar where her and Carol were having a drink. This, of course, could have been the deciding factor that led to her tragic death, but considering the difference in her symptoms, and especially the red bags under her eyes, it seems that something else happened.

Considering the fact that Carol Sturka, the Pluribus protagonist, and a few other individuals appear to have been completely immune to the virus, it is likely that there were other people who experienced unexpected side effects.

Helen could have died from the impact of her fall, but it seems likely that her condition was different and worse from the first moment the change began to occur to the moment she took her final breath in Pluribus episode 1.
