Chris Evans and Dwayne Johnson teamed up for Red One, and while the movie did not become the theatrical hit everyone involved expected, it is now finding new life on streaming. Evans and Johnson share a few similarities, with both becoming known for their cinematic work, as well as being part of different superhero universes.
Evans starred in many of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s best movies as one of the main characters in the franchise, Captain America. As for Johnson, the actor led the DC Extended Universe’s Black Adam movie as its title anti-hero. At this time, Evans is reportedly returning to the MCU as Steve Rogers in Avengers: Doomsday, while Johnson seemingly has no future in DC’s movies.
The Marvel and DC actors merged forces in 2024’s Red One, an action comedy movie that had Johnson as the chief of the North Pole security, who works with Evans’ Jack O’Malley, a hacker, to try to locate the missing Santa Claus (J.K. Simmons). Red One is now a worldwide streaming hit, ranking 8th globally on HBO Max’s Top Ten Movies list, according to FlixPatrol.
Red One‘s streaming success is a great update for the movie, as the action comedy failed to make up for its budget while in theaters. With a shockingly high reported budget of $250 million, Red One needed to end its box office run in the $500 million to $625 million range just to break even.
Despite the talent attached to the film, that was way too hard a task for the Christmas action comedy. Red One ended its box office run with just $186 million worldwide, meaning it lost the studio hundreds of millions. Due to that, it is exciting for the film that it is now becoming a major streaming hit, and that should only get better.
Red One is available on Prime Video in the United States, where it is currently the 4th most-watched movie.
The reason for that is that Red One has started to trend on HBO Max in the lead-up to the Christmas season. If the movie is already the 8th most-watched movie on HBO Max in November, then there is a huge chance that the Chris Evans and Dwayne Johnson action movie will become an even bigger streaming hit once December arrives.
As is known, the Holiday season tends to lead to rewatches of Christmas movies like Home Alone, Love Actually, and so on. With an 89% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes at the time of writing, Red One landed well with the audience, differing greatly from the negative 30% score it has from critics. Based on those factors, the movie can continue to grow on streaming.
