Lionsgate has dropped the full trailer for the eagerly awaited thriller The Housemaid, adapted from Freida McFadden’s novel and starring Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried. The Housemaid follows Millie (Sweeney), a young woman who seemingly gets a financial break when she becomes a housemaid for rich Nina (Seyfried) and her family, but the dynamics quickly turn sinister.
The Housemaid will be released theatrically on December 19, following Sweeney’s several other 2025 movies and ahead of the release of Seyfried’s The Testament of Ann Lee on Christmas Day. Directed by Paul Feig, The Housemaid also stars Brandon Sklenar, Michele Morrone, and Elizabeth Perkins. Check out the new trailer below:
This trailer emphasizes a twisted holiday tone, as the movie is coming out and may be set around Christmastime, but depicts a spiraling horror-thriller plot. After several instances in the trailer of Nina threatening Millie, the latter seems to have become exhausted yet accustomed to everything that happens in this house, as she goes to get a sandwich while covered in blood.
It’s easier said than done to become a thriller or horror Christmas classic in the same vein as Die Hard or Gremlins, but The Housemaid has a fanbase from being a bestselling novel first that could help it succeed at the box office. The Housemaid will also close out a year of flops for Sweeney, following Eden, American, and now Christy‘s box office struggles.
While Sweeney needs a comeback, Seyfried is at the center of the conversation about 2026 Best Lead Actress Oscar nominations for her turn in The Testament of Ann Lee. Seyfried, known for the likes of Mean Girls and Mamma Mia!, also starred in the Peacock thriller miniseries Long Bright River this year (which is also based on a popular novel).
While The Housemaid is the end of Sweeney’s year, Seyfried has a bigger movie coming a week later. On the other hand, The Housemaid can stand out at the box office, which will be dominated by Oscar-bound dramas at that point, and may be seen by audiences as some needed variation. Regardless, it will be interesting to see the two stars delve into their characters’ tense relationship, perhaps the movie’s biggest draw.
