Actors IU and Byeon Woo Seok are teaming up for the highly anticipated romantic drama The 21st Century Grand Prince’s Wife, which is officially set to premiere on Disney+ in 2026, according to Walt Disney Company Korea’s announcement on November 13.
Set in an alternate modern-day South Korea with a constitutional monarchy, the series explores the romance between two individuals bound by societal roles but yearning for personal freedom. The story follows Sung Hee Joo, a highly accomplished woman born a commoner who has everything except noble status—and Yi Ahn, the sorrowful royal son who has nothing to call his own despite his princely lineage.

IU will portray Sung Hee Joo, a top-tier businesswoman with beauty, brains, and ambition, frustrated by the limitations of her social rank. To transcend her status, she enters into a contract marriage, driven by confidence and resolve.
Byeon Woo Seok will play Yi Ahn, a royal prince whose status as the second son means living in the shadows unable to shine or speak freely. He conceals his passionate spirit behind a reserved facade, shaped by the restrictions of his position.

The series delves into the emotional journey of these two characters how their contrasting life choices, forged by similar pains, collide and reshape their paths. As they grow through each other, their internal transformations lead to a powerful and heartfelt connection. Viewers can expect IU and Byeon Woo Seok to bring this layered chemistry to life with both emotional depth and electrifying charm.
The 21st Century Grand Prince’s Wife will be directed by Park Joon Hwa, known for What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim, Alchemy of Souls, and Love Your Enemy. The script is penned by Yoo Ah In, who won the Excellence Award in the 2022 MBC Drama Screenplay Competition for this project.
The drama will also be broadcast on MBC, expanding its reach to both streaming and television audiences globally.
