Grey’s Anatomy season 22’s fall finale saw Jo Wilson (Camilla Luddington) struggling more than anticipated as her pregnancy complicated her health, and according to Luddington, things aren’t going to get better quickly. Throughout Grey’s Anatomy season 22, Jo and Atticus “Link” Lincoln (Chris Caramack) have been waiting for the other shoe to drop. After his life-threatening injuries in the premiere, they’ve played a tough game of chicken.
As Grey’s Anatomy season 22’s fall finale saw Jo’s heart failing, her diagnosis of peripartum cardiomyopathy seemed like a complicated-but-solvable issue until she was on the OR table. With one of the babies’ stats plummeting, Dr. Winston Ndugu (Anthony Hill) got set for an emergency c-section. Luddington, chatting with The Wrap, shared that “it gets dark” for Jo when Grey’s returns in January.
“This is what we do best, these horrifying, terrifying midseason finales,” Luddington explained, and while she was relishing the chance to get to work with Hill, it was “very “be careful what you wish for” [circumstances].” Luddington warned viewers that Grey’s Anatomy will be “brutal” upon its return. “Emotionally prepare because the next episode coming up after this, it is worse, to be honest,” the actor advised.
Although Luddington’s performance throughout the episode showed an interesting new sense of growth for Jo, who’s been a part of Grey’s since season 9, it was clear that she was terrified as her heart issues grew more dire. Jo’s breathless hope that Link would stay calm was a sweet nod to the character’s growth and the couple’s understanding of one another.
While it’s clear that Luddington will be moving forward on Grey’s Anatomy for the time being, it always seems possible for the long-running series to take aim and fire at one of their own, especially those who have been there the longest. Though losing Jo would be a shock, it’s always a possibility on Grey’s, despite it not seeming likely.
Regardless of what happens next with Jo, the fact that Luddington is claiming that the next episode of the series, set to return on January 8, will be a brutal one is something for Grey’s fans to prepare for. As Grey’s Anatomy moves through a season that’s been tough to start, it seems the show is finally going to take flight in its second half.
With a short, six-episode fall run, Grey’s Anatomy season 22 will be able to do far more damage as it moves through the back half of its episode order with 12 more episodes to run. For Jo, Link, and the rest of the doctors at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, it’s possible that Grey’s Anatomy season 22 could change things enough to be unrecognizable by the spring.
