Though Jujutsu Kaisen might not focus on romance, fans can’t help but obsess over the potential for relationships between the hit series’ core cast of characters. Gojo x Geto and Yuta x Maki are particularly popular ships, regardless of how canon they may or may not be.
One potential Jujutsu Kaisen romance that has captured the imagination of fans is Yuji x Nobara. Unfortunately, one of the series’ biggest stars has sunk that ship.
At Anime Pasadena 2025, ScreenRant interviewed Yuji’s English voice actor, Adam McArthur, and asked him specifically about the relationship between Yuji and Nobara. To McArthur, the two Jujutsu sorcerers are strictly friends, which is part of what makes their dynamic so appealing.
I think it’s purely platonic. What I love about JJK is that we almost don’t have time to consider romance. There’s a task at hand, and whatever is right in front of them is what they’re dealing with.
Friendships are such underrated relationships—we’re always looking for it to be more. But Yuji, Nobara, and Megumi have this bond through trauma and everything they’ve experienced, and I think that’s really special.
Sorry Yuji x Nobara Fans, McArthur Is Right
Despite the popularity of the Yuji x Nobara ship, McArthur’s comment on their relationship is spot on. Out of all the potential Jujutsu Kaisen relationships, Yuji x Nobara always seemed particularly far-fetched.
Though the two do share a good deal of screen time together, and clearly mean a lot to each other, their interactions are always strictly platonic and their dynamic is much closer to siblings rather than potential love interests.
Furthermore, fans know that Yuji’s main potential romantic partner is a girl named Yuko Ozawa. Yuko is an ordinary girl who seemingly has a crush on Yuji, something the Jujutsu sorcerer himself seems oblivious to.
Outside of Jennifer Lawrence, Yuji shows very little interest in dating throughout Jujutsu Kaisen. As McArthur points out, the young sorcerer just has too much going on to be concerned with dating.
Jujutsu Kaisen’s Unique Take On Romance Makes It Unique Among Shonen Series
Jujutsu Kaisen’s lack of romantic subplots actually makes it a little unique in the world of big shonen anime/manga. Series like Naruto, Demon Slayer, and even Dragon Ball to a certain extent, seem keen on pairing off their female cast members with their male cast members.
The one big exception to this, right now at least, is One Piece. One Piece creator Eiichiro Oda has said he’s uninterested in exploring romance, though the age of those comments means the door isn’t necessarily shut on future romantic developments, especially when in-universe characters like Sanji are so focused on romance.
While some fans may bemoan the lack of romance, the resulting dynamic between Jujutsu Kaisen’s cast feels fresh.
Though some fans may wish for Jujutsu Kaisen’s Yuji and Nobara to become a romantic item, that seems unlikely. While McArthur’s comments are far from the final say on the matter, fans may get an official answer on whom, if anyone, Yuji ended up with, given that he just returned in Jujutsu Kaisen: Modulo.
