In I Love LA, True Whitaker plays Alani, a rich kid of an Oscar-winning producer. The role isn’t too far off her own life.
Born in 1998, True is the youngest daughter of actor Forest Whitaker. Forest welcomed True with his then-wife, actress Keisha Nash, whom he married in 1996. They share an older daughter, Sonnet, who was born in 1997.

The Last King of Scotland actor is also a dad to a son, Ocean, from a previous relationship, and raised Keisha’s daughter, Autumn, as his own.
True’s parents divorced in 2018 after 22 years of marriage. In 2023, Keisha passed away from liver disease, news True broke in a social media post. “Goodbye mommy. I love you 4ever and beyond,” True wrote in a caption over a black-and-white photo of her mother. “The most beautiful woman in the world … thank you for teaching me every single thing I know. I’ll see you in my dreams and I’ll feel you in my heart.”
In 2021, True made her acting debut in Godfather in Harlem, a crime series led by her dad. However, I Love LA marks a breakout role for the star, who was born and raised in Los Angeles. In interviews, True has made it clear that she doesn’t shy away from the nepo baby label.
“I love the fact that she [Alani] is not embarrassed or doesn’t feel some type of way about her nepotism. And to me, I feel the exact same way,” she told Shadow and Act in early November. “I’m proud of my Black ass dad, who made something of himself and is a legend. And to have that so close to me, [and] to be able to pull from that and be so heavily inspired…I’ll never be embarrassed or feel weird about being associated with the greatness that he has created. And I’m hoping that I can be able to do that too.”
