Ahead of Stranger Things Season 5‘s release, the Duffer Brothers revealed four key episodes from previous seasons that fans need to watch in preparation. The co-creators of the sci-fi fantasy thriller series shared the list of episodes in a recent interview, where they also listed other things viewers need to know before diving into the final season.
Duffer Brothers reveal Stranger Things episodes to watch before Season 5
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the Duffer Brothers, Matt and Ross, recommended watching the following four episodes to people who had no time to binge the previous seasons, as they set up the events of Season 5 Volume 1:
- Season 2 Episode 4 – “Will the Wise”
- Season 2 Episode 6 – “The Spy”
- Season 4 Episode 7 – “The Massacre at Hawkins Lab”
- Season 4 Episode 9 – “The Piggyback”
Matt Duffer told THR that Season 2 was where he and Ross Duffer started developing the show’s mythology and where it became clear that the series would continue. “That’s where we started to really plant the seeds for the mythology, and I think probably that’s why that is as relevant as it is,” he added. “Season four is also highly relevant — ‘Massacre at Hawkins Lab’ is a good one.”
Ross explained the importance of Season 4 Episode 7, noting that it revealed some answers concerning the Upside Down’s mythology and explored Henry/Vecna and Eleven‘s relationship.
Also in the interview, Ross recommended that fans watch Stranger Things’ “early seasons” if they were doing a rewatch, as Season 5’s story was heavily tied to Seasons 1 and 2. “[Those] are the seasons we referenced the most, because we really wanted this to be circular and to come full circle,” he explained, adding, “There are a lot of mysteries we set up and then intentionally did not answer in those early seasons.”
He continued, stating he and Matt kept some plot points mysterious in Season 1, even when they didn’t know the show would be renewed for Season 2. He elaborated, “For instance, what is the Upside Down? Why was Will taken, which obviously is why this season begins with a flashback to his time in the Upside Down.”
