Starring Ted Danson as Charles, who infiltrates a retirement house for a theft investigation, Netflix’s A Man on the Inside is indeed based on a true story. The comedy series takes inspiration from a 2020 Oscar-nominated documentary, The Mole Agent.
Similar to the show, the documentary follows 83-year-old Sergio Chamy, a Chilean man who goes undercover in a nursing home to investigate the alleged mistreatment of the residents. However, Sergio’s investigation concludes that no crime was truly being committed at the facility.
While he discovered that one of the residents, Marta, was stealing things, it was due to her memory loss. As in the show, the documentary also highlights the loneliness experienced by many residents due to infrequent visits from their family members.

A Man on the Inside Season 2 Sends Charles Back to Campus
Netflix has officially renewed A Man on the Inside Season 2 with Ted Danson returning as retired professor-turned-undercover detective Charles Nieuwendyk. After posing as a nursing home resident in Season 1, Charles’s latest mission takes him back to familiar territory: a college campus. This time, he goes undercover at Wheeler College to uncover the mystery behind the college president being blackmailed.
The official synopsis of A Man on the Inside Season 2 reads,
Eager to take on another big undercover case, Charles Nieuwendyk (Danson) gets his chance when a mysterious blackmailer targets Wheeler College president Jack Beringer (Max Greenfield), who enlists Charles to go undercover as a professor.
Charles also has plenty of suspects to keep an eye on, including the free-spirited music teacher Mona, played by Danson’s wife, Mary Steenburgen, whose zest for life rekindles emotions he thought he had long buried after his wife’s passing.
Season 2 will also bring back several characters from the first season, including Mary Elizabeth Ellis, Lilah Richcreek Estrada, Stephanie Beatriz, and Stephen McKinley Henderson, alongside several new cast members and characters.

Michael Schur Teases the Future of A Man on the Inside
A Man on the Inside creator Michael Schur has big hopes for the future of the comedy series. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he revealed that he and the writers had always envisioned the story continuing, even before the first season had finished.
He further informed,
Before the season was even over, we had started saying [a second season] could be this, could be this, and trying to figure out how it would be different and how it would be the same
He emphasized that the finale left Charles (Ted Danson) in an exciting new place, with a renewed lease on life, a fresh sense of purpose, and a fledgling career as an undercover detective, setting the stage for future seasons.
“You have a lot of building blocks for future seasons,” the showrunner added, suggesting that the Netflix comedy series could extend well beyond Season 2.
