While it is great news that Alien: Earth was renewed for a second season, the news also comes with one big caveat that is very disappointing. Alien: Earth season 2 was renewed nearly two months after the ending of Alien: Earth season 1. That news was a big relief, as many of the shows’ fans had been wondering if FX and Disney were going to renew it at all, despite Earth‘s impressive Rotten Tomatoes score.
Now we know for a fact that Alien: Earth season 2 will at least get the chance to continue the story of Wendy and the Lost Boys, and that we won’t be left with an unresolved cliffhanger relating to Boy Kavalier and the rest of their prisoners. As great as that news is, Alien: Earth season 2’s renewal also had a less obvious bit of bad news hidden within the confirmation.
Alien: Earth Season 2 Probably Won’t Be Released Until 2027
In FX’s announcement of Alien: Earth season 2’s renewal, they mentioned that filming on the second season would begin sometime in 2026 in London. That 2026 filming timeline means that Alien: Earth season 2 probably won’t be released until 2027 at the earliest. We don’t even know when in 2026 filming will begin, but it’ll likely still take a year of editing, marketing, and production once filming is complete.
That’s a big disappointment; fans of the show are going to have to wait nearly two years or longer to get answers about season 1’s cliffhanger ending. Unfortunately, it’s also not an uncommon disappointment. Shows made specifically for streaming often take a long hiatus between seasons. Stranger Things, Wednesday, Severance, and more all spring to mind as examples of long waits.
This delay in Alien: Earth season 2 was also somewhat predictable. The amount of time it took to renew Alien: Earth season 2 highlighted the problem streamers have of not getting new seasons out quickly enough. Even though this was always the most likely outcome, it’s still disappointing. We shouldn’t have to wait this long for a new season of a show, no matter how much effort goes into the production of it.
Noah Hawley’s Deal With FX & Disney Is Still Great News For Alien: Earth
Luckily, there is a silver lining to this news. FX’s press release also noted that Noah Hawley, the creator of Alien: Earth, just signed a new overall deal with FX and Disney in a creative capacity. That means both Disney and FX are putting a lot of faith in Hawley to lead future projects, presumably television shows. Hawley also worked with FX on the TV adaptation of Fargo, which indicates Disney and FX have quite a bit of confidence in him.
That’s tremendous news for Alien: Earth. If Disney and FX are willing to give Hawley a new overall deal while confirming Alien: Earth season 2 at the same time, that’s a sign that the companies are confident Earth will be successful for multiple seasons. There are no guarantees yet, but this news is a strong indication that Alien: Earth won’t just get a second season, and that it could go on for years to come.

That could also help alleviate the problem in Alien: Earth season 2’s renewal. Now that Disney and FX are placing more faith in Hawley and Earth, it probably won’t take them as long to renew Earth season 3 when it comes time. Not having to wait around for nearly two months to do audience and market testing could really expedite the show’s production schedule, and we could be seeing Alien: Earth on a much more regular basis.
