Amazon’s Upcoming Dark Comedy Starring Iconic Singer Just Got Way More Exciting

Ti West directing an episode of Rian Johnson’s murder mystery series Poker Face makes me even more excited about his upcoming dark comedy show written by an iconic pop singer. West, known for his critically acclaimed horror films X and Pearl, is currently developing the new series with Amazon.

West, who first rose to prominence by directing the cult classic horror film V/H/S, makes his return to directing TV for the first time since 2020’s dystopian sci-fi series Tales from the Loop. He directed the newly released eleventh episode of Poker Face season 2, starring Natasha Lyonne, Justin Theroux, Hayley Joel Osment, and more.

Ti West Directing A Poker Face Episode Sets Up His Upcoming Dark Comedy Show With Halsey

West Will Direct Amazon’s Dark Comedy Series Bloodlust Written By Halsey

Ti West directing an episode of Rian Johnson’s Poker Face is a great setup for his upcoming Amazon series Bloodlust written by singer and songwriter Halsey. While details for Bloodlust remain under wraps, Halsey will create but not star in the dark comedy series with West set to direct.

Although Halsey, whose full name is Ashley Frangipane, has professional acting experience under her belt, she is not expected to appear in Bloodlust. Instead, she will act as creator, writer, and executive producer of the series. Bloodlust does not have an announced release date at this time, but Mark Friedman of Severance acclaim will be the showrunner.

Poker Face is a classic murder-of-the-week series with dark comedy elements. Although it’s not a horror series at all, it does feel right up West’s alley considering the murder plot elements and ensuing mystery. Some of the violent moments in Poker Face season 2, episode 11, certainly feel constructed by an experienced eye in the horror genre.

West also recently directed the short film Neverland starring Kid Cudi and Hayley Joel Osment, who appears in Poker Face season 2, episode 11. Cudi also co-wrote the screenplay, setting a trend of West working with musical artists in a visual narrative medium.

Amazon’s Bloodlust Won’t Be The First Time Ti West & Halsey Have Worked Together

Halsey Appeared In Last Year’s MaXXXine & Has Been Acting Since 2016

Tabby and Maxine in MaXXXine

Halsey will make her screenwriting debut with Bloodlust but has already appeared in one of West’s films, 2024’s MaXXXine. Halsey plays Tabby Martin, an exotic dancer in MaXXXine. She made her feature film acting debut in 2018’s A Star is Born, playing herself.

Poker Face Season 2 Review: Rian Johnson Has Cleverly Mastered His Addictive & Old School Murder-Of-The-Week Series

Perhaps the greatest achievement of Poker Face season 2 is that, despite its obvious and steadfast algorithmic structure, there’s never a dull moment.

Halsey also made her TV acting debut nearly a decade ago in two episodes of the drama series Roadies. She has since appeared in films such as Sing 2 and Americana as well as TV shows like American Dad! Her collaboration with Ti West after his Poker Face episode looks to be very promising, considering how theatrical her albums like Manic have been.
