Amit Sadh: No person can achieve anything alone on their own!

The actor talks about nepotism and takes up the cudgels for Bollywood

Being the quintessential Bollywood outsider, Amit Sadh has quietly been carving his own niche in it, in his own way. Coming from a television background, without any industry Godfather or any kind of Bollywood support, he has making steady inroads as an actor into films. His last release Ram Gopal Varma’s Sarkar3 may have been a BO failure but it certainly won the actor critical acclaim as the hot-headed, impulsive Shivaji Nagre (Cheeku). This year he has a variety of roles including bagging one with Akshay Kumar in Gold, a cop caper crime drama web series Breathe, a period film based on the INA trials Raag Desh, and another period film on gangsters, among others. Amit tells us today why he’s happy with his roles and doesn’t believe that nepotism exists in Bollywood. Amit from the heart, as the actor is himself.

This year you have an interesting choice of roles and all of them are very different from the other…
I know and how lucky is that! I can’t tell you how happy I am…

You have come from outside Bollywood and yet managed to be successful and carve a niche for yourself.
I don’t believe that only people from Bollywood make it big and outsiders find it very tough to make an impact. Bekaar ki baate hai. I don’t know why people keep whining about such things. I have come from outside but I have met some wonderful and loving people – [beautifulquote align=”full” cite=””]in my personal life I have met some really bad people but I have met some very good people in the film industry. They have helped me a lot – from the media who have gone out of their way to support me to directors, producers and actors. [/beautifulquote]Mujhe itna pyar mila hai industry se that I tell everyone with folded hands I have no complaints from anybody. [beautifulquote align=”full” cite=””]I am so overwhelmed with their love and grateful to everybody![/beautifulquote] Just one request to all – please don’t tell me to go away from here, just let me remain…

So you don’t believe in Kangana Ranaut’s comment on nepotism?
I won’t take her or anybody’s else’s name as everyone is entitled to their point of view. Sabki apni soch hoti hai. But I will say one thing – before complaining about anything just ask yourself one thing: Hum kya leke aaye the? [beautifulquote align=”full” cite=””]If we got so much name, fame, money and success in Mumbai and from the film industry, but we think we have achieved all this on our own, then you are under a misapprehension. [/beautifulquote]No person can achieve anything alone and on their own…  Bahut log hote hai jo aapke madat karte hain, aur tab jaake aap ko kuch prapt hota hai. Kabhi kabhi yeh hum bhool jaate hai aur complaint karne lag jaate hai. I don’t complain. I am very grateful to all those people who have helped me.

Your next film Raag Desh releases on July 28
Yes it’s based on a true life story of the Indian National Army trials and the joint court martial of Indian National Army officers Captain Prem Sehgal (Mohit Marwah), Lt. Colonel Gurbaksh Singh Dhillon (Amit Sadh) and Captain Shah Nawaz Khan (Kunal Kapoor) and is directed by Tigmanshu Dhulia. I play the legendary Lt. Gurbaksh Singh Dhillon. The title Raagdesh kyun ki desh ke azaadi ke raag woh log gun gunate also. There are three important figures in the INA whose cases are tried in the trial as they are convicted of war crimes – Lt. Gurbaksh Singh Dhillon, Captain Shah Nawaz Khan and Captain Prem Sehgal. The Britishers sentenced them as they were so scared. Entire India was with these three guys.

Tell us about Lt. Col. Gurbaksh Singh Dhillon.
[beautifulquote align=”full” cite=””]I didn’t know anything about this part of history so I read this book From My Bones, an autobiography on Lt. Col. Dhillon. It was fascinating as I came to know about the INA case and the personality of Gurbaksh. He was a very cheerful man, used to write poetry aur sabse gul milke rehte the. [/beautifulquote]He loved his country, his mother and his people a lot. Gurbaksh was a man high on emotions and energy. Tigmanshu is one of my favorite directors. I love his kind of cinema as there’s lot of honesty, integrity and courage in it. I am grateful to Tishu sir for always giving me good roles in his films. Zindagi bhar bahut abhari hoon mein unka.

You have also become a favorite of Ram Gopal Varma after Sarkar 3. What is happening on his next movie – a horror thriller?
I cannot be shooting for that as I am currently in London shooting for Gold. It’s too premature to talk about his next film. He’s a great filmmaker and I am sure if he has something good for me, he will offer me. We are in touch on WhatsApp and socialize sometimes and I guess that has given rise to the speculation.

Would you be open to doing a horror film?
Mujhe genres se koi lena dena nahi hai. What I like I will do. I will work with anybody who gives me a good role.

You will also be seen in a web series Breathe.
It’s a very intense story about law and order, cops, crime and justice and will be aired on Amazon prime. I play a cop and I am in it along with R Madhavan and Anuj Sachdeva. A new guy called Nayan Sharma has directed it and Abundantia Entertainment has produced it. I liked my role and said yes. It doesn’t matter whether it’s a film or a web series. If work and role is good I will say yes. [beautifulquote align=”full” cite=””]My motto is simple – if somebody offers me a good role with love and respect, wherever that may be – on a street, locality, auditorium or theatre, whether it’s a small or big film I will do it! I will go there and nobody can stop me.[/beautifulquote]

Now that you and Akshay Kumar have started to shoot for Gold, how do you find him as a co-actor?
It’s been wonderful working with him. It was one of my dreams to work with Akshay sir. He’s an amazing actor, such a fit guy and there’s so much to learn from him. I am really looking forward to this film, spend time with him, work with and learn from him.

As you play a hockey player in the film did you have to undergo training before you started shooting?
Yes we had to undergo four months of hockey training before the shoot under a coach. I can play pretty well now. Let me put it like this – if I don’t get work in films then I can take up work somewhere as a hockey player (laughs). I had to be fit also as it’s to do with sports.

You are also doing a period drama, Yaara with Shruti Haasan and Vidyut Jamwal which has been directed by Tigmanshu Dhulia. It’s said to be inspired from the French drama, Les Lyonnais, directed by Olivier Marchal.
It’s about a gang of boys who get into crime. It’s based in 1925 and the gangsters in India who used to rule then.

You have come from a television background and TV is very big today. Will you do something in that medium?
I don’t understand the words big or small, TV or movies… I haven’t made my life using these words big and small. I will go wherever they offer me good work. Jahan acchcha kaam aur mauka milega, mann ko achcha lagega, log achche lagenge, mann hoga toh karenge. Jahan bhi hoga wahan jayenge!
