Amit Sadh On Playing A Character Modelled On His Dad

Many would agree that one of the best things about Reema Kagti’s Gold is Amit Sadh as the aristocratic arrogant and yet likable hockey player Raghubir Pratap Singh.

Amit now reveals that he modeled his character in Gold on his father.

Reveals the talented young actor, “My father Ram Chandra Dogra was a national-level hockey player. He was very much an aristocrat by temperament and generous to a fault. That sequence you see in Gold where I take off all my clothes and donate it to a roadside destitute… this, my father did, not once but many times over during his lifetime.”

Regrettably, Amit lost his father when Amit was only 16. “He wanted me to become a hockey player. He didn’t live to see me fulfil his dream. But somewhere that dream stayed alive in my subconscious. When I heard my role in Gold I wept openly. It was my father’s character come to life.”

Amit says the director Reema Kagti was a little taken aback by his response. “She kept asking. ‘Babu, why are you upset?’ She thought I didn’t like my role. When in fact the truth was just the opposite. I have never felt more possessive of a part. I hope my father has somewhere seen what I’ve done. That’s him I am playing in Gold.”

Amit is hugely proud to be part of the ensemble cast in Gold. “We all actually became part of a team, just like we were meant to be on screen. There was no rivalry or one-upmanship among us. Sadly the media events which we attended to promote Gold all seemed to be interested only in getting to know who fought with whom and who was the biggest pranksters on the sets. Arrey bhai, we were making a serious film on a very important chapter in the history of Indian sports. Where was the scope for pranks and masti? Masti must be happening on the sets of comedies. Not on our set.”

Amit who was part of the Indian television industry before making the transition to the large screen in 2010 in Ram Gopal Varma’s Phoonk, came into fame with Kai Po Che in 2013.

He is happy with the films that he is doing. “There are no leads and second leads, no heroes and supporting actors any longer. Everybody plays a part, big or small. I am happy to be part of films like Gold and Tigmanshu Dhulia’s Raag Desh where the stress is on characterization.”
