Despite the lack of a renewal from Prime Video, Ballard season 2 gets an encouraging update. Debuting in July, and based on the Michael Connelly character, the Bosch spinoff focuses on Detective Renée Ballard (Maggie Q.) as she runs Los Angeles’ severely underfunded cold case unit with an all-volunteer unit.
With a Ballard cast that includes Courtney Taylor, Michael Mosley, Rebecca Field, Victoria Moroles, Amy Hill, and John Carroll Lynch, with Bosch‘s Titus Welliver making special guest appearances, Ballard and her team uncover a dark conspiracy along the way. Despite how the spinoff ends on a massive cliffhanger, Prime Video has yet to renew the drama.
Even though there hasn’t been any official word on whether Ballard season 2 is getting picked up, the spinoff is included in the California Film Commission‘s list of movie and television productions that would receive tax credit to keep filming in California. In the case of Ballard, it would be a $14.8 million tax credit.
What This Means For Ballard Season 2
The spinoff of Bosch: Legacy has all the components for a renewal. The missing persons’ drama generated 2.5 billion minutes viewed in July alone on Nielsen’s Top 10 streaming charts, reaching its peak in the week of July 21 with more than 600 minutes viewed. That kind of consistent charting means that Prime Video subscribers likely worked the binge drop at their own pace.
Ballard, which is developed and executive produced by Michael Alaimo, is also a success with critics. It sits at 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, with 20 reviews, as the consensus offers praise for Maggie Q’s lead performance. It’s a good thing since the spinoff ends in a way that screams out for a continuation, potentially making it a long-running Prime Video crime drama.
