BTS’s RM Reveals Insomnia Struggles Amid HYBE Scandal: “Couldn’t Sleep for 78 Hours”

During a June 10 livestream commemorating his discharge from the Army’s 15th Infantry Division military band, RM candidly reflected on the mental toll of his service. “Military life was extremely tough—not just physically but mentally,” he said. “It was the first time I ever struggled with sleep like that.”
The artist specifically pointed to April and May 2023 as the period when his insomnia began, coinciding with the height of the HYBE–Min Hee-jin dispute. “There was a lot happening with the company back then. I couldn’t sleep at all. For 78 hours, I didn’t close my eyes once,” RM revealed.

The lack of sleep severely impacted his duties. “I had to take sleeping pills and even consulted a psychiatrist during leave,” he added. “But the side effects were rough, and I still feel afraid to sleep, even now.”
This period aligned with the explosive fallout between HYBE and ADOR’s CEO Min Hee-jin, including allegations of a hostile takeover attempt and counterclaims of structural impossibility. The scandal snowballed, dragging BTS into unrelated controversies, such as rumors of cult affiliations and past marketing fraud, claims that BigHit Music firmly denied.

Despite these turbulent times, RM’s confession has resonated with fans for its raw honesty. Now that Jimin and Jungkook have also completed their service as of June 11, and SUGA is set to conclude his by June 21, the full group’s return is on the horizon.
As the world watches BTS prepare for their next chapter, RM’s emotional openness sheds light on the unseen burdens idols carry—even while serving their country.
