Carnie Wilson Responds to ‘Cruel’ Criticism About Daughter’s ‘Idol’ Audition

Carnie Wilson is calling the negative comments about her daughter Lola’s “American Idol” audition “cruel,” noting they are “really pissing me off.” The Wilson Phillips member shared her thoughts on the matter at the 2025 90s Con.

During a March 30 panel appearance at 90s Con, Wilson weighed in about the negativity surrounding daughter Lola Bonfiglio’s “Idol” audition.
To put it mildly, she wasn’t too happy.
Carnie and Wendy Wilson joined Lola during her “American Idol” audition, singing the Wilson Phillips hit song “Hold On.”
“It was the scariest thing she ever has done. She was trembling with nerves, and she did great,” Wilson noted. “I’m so proud of her. And they asked us to sing, so we came and crashed the party. I don’t think that Lionel [Richie] and Carrie Underwood and Luke [Bryan] knew we were gonna be with her, so that was fun.”
She continued, “We love singing with Lola. We love singing with her, and she sings with us on tour sometimes, but you know she’s an aspiring artist.”
Wilson added, “I just wanna say that we’re human, you know, and the internet can be so cruel, and the comments are really pissing me off, and I can’t respond.”
Her sister Wendy noted, “That’s hard for Carnie!”
Wilson felt the comments were uncalled for, as her daughter’s musical ambitions shouldn’t require any commentary. “Would you encourage a doctor’s son not to be a doctor? Would you ever say, ‘Don’t be a doctor because your dad is a doctor?’ Lola wants to be a singer, and they say these terrible things, and she was so hurt.”

Wilson’s bandmate Chynna Phillips, who was also on the panel, noted that not everything said about Lola was negative. “The majority of the comments were very supportive,” she explained. “I have to say because I read some, too, and I think that we need to recognize that.”
Wilson, however, didn’t agree. “The majority was not,” she said. “But I just want people to understand that it’s not all these happy glitter things for real people with real hearts and souls.”
The singer continued, “I encourage her to do it because she loves to sing. I’m so proud of her that she was even brave enough to audition for it.”
Wilson added, “She sounds so beautiful. I’m so excited for her future. She has a stunning voice.”
