Celina Jaitley Reacts To Jennifer Aniston’s Blog On Stereotyping Women

“We women are complete with or without a mate, with or without a child. We get to decide for ourselves what is beautiful when it comes to our bodies….These are the most sensible words ever spoken by a famous and beautiful woman that I have ever heard. She says: ‘The objectification and scrutiny we put women through is absurd and disturbing ”

I agree because I have experienced it more then anyone else since I have been in the glamour followed by world of cinema since the age of 16.Modern society chronically objectifies the female body and many women including myself at one point come to view themselves through the eyes of an external observer habitually monitoring our own appearance whether in public or private settings. Given the negative effects associated with self as well as public objectification—such as body shame, appearance anxiety, depression, and eating disorders it really does become a matter of great concern as to what effect it is having on our minds subconsciously and more so on young people all around the world. Even on our side of the world whether it is the most iconic & beautiful woman in the world, Aishwarya who was shamed and hounded for her post natal frame or how people jumped to conclusions that I have “left” Bollywood just because I didn’t marry an actor/sports star, had twins, took a sabbatical to care for them and chose to keep my family away from the industrial hub. So my decision to seek a sabbatical made people jump to conclusion that I have of course quit films and there is no such thing as a sabbatical in our industry ( ps: applicable only to women). Our modern society puts immense pressure on women with their preconceived decisions about how women should look or work or speak or even what they should support . Not once is a woman given an opportunity to take her own decision concerning her body or what fulfills her. It is instead governed by preconceived guidelines of how a woman should be, behave or look like and it seems like basically we women are probably loosing all autonomy over our bodies and our career & life decisions thanks to preconceived notions of our society specially for women like us in the spotlight. So while I try to ignore what the press writes or people jump in conclusion to regarding me , I am more worried about the young little ones because our objectification as women in spotlight has a profound affect on how these young little girls will decide for themselves when they grow up. So in a nutshell what Jennifer says is right and none of the guidelines lauded down by the society “complete” us. Look within yourself and follow your joy, stop assumimg that people will always want what “you” want and what makes “you” happy.”
