Get this. If you are a member of the Censor Board Of Film Certification(CBFC) you have to be very very far removed from reality. And you have to make sure that the world at-large also remains insulated from reality.
This is what the director Saket Chowdhary and producer DineshVijayan discovered when they submitted for censor certification, their dark satire Hindi Medium on the travails of parents trying to enroll their daughter into an English-medium school.
Bizarrely , the censor board has asked for a disclaimer stating that the film is nothing but a work of the imagination and bears no resemblance to the real world.
This, after the film clearly shows that the struggles of the film’s parents(Irrfan Khan and Saba Qamar) to enroll their child in a posh(read: English medium) school is unmistakably based on actual facts.
Says a source from the CBFC, “We realize this is a true-life situation. Thousands of parents have to go through the financial and emotional ordeal and suffering shown in the film. But if we don’t add a disclaimer stating it’s all fictional, we may incur the wrath of educational institutions across the country claiming the film maligns them.Better safe than sorry.”
Better the la la land of Baahubali than the realism of a social satire.
