Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc: What Significant Changes Have Been Made? Masato Nakazono Reveals

Set to hit a select few theaters in the US on October 24, 2025, the creators behind Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc have already revealed how the new film will differ from the anime series and the original manga. During a special panel at New York Comic Con 2025 (via THR), assistant director Masato Nakazono and CGI producer Yusuke Tannawa shared exciting insights about the highly anticipated movie.

For example, in terms of the visual look, Makima’s hair color has been changed. [We] would make it more vibrant, more color that will stand out in a film. We wanted to inherit the anime series, but size-wise, [it] is different. We had to make sure that all the background would fit in the theatrical frame as well, so we worked hard on that.

There are no speaking words between panels, so we have to create that and make sure the dialogue is going to stand up. The characters Reze and Denji have very personal, intimate relations. Denji thinks Reze is so cute, so we wanted to do things that made the audience feel the same way as Denji would.

Masato Nakazono confirmed that while the film stays true to the hit 2022 TV series by the name Chainsaw Man, it also makes several visual and storytelling changes to suit the big screen. He further explained that director Tatsuya Yoshihara’s goal was to make the movie feel larger, deeper, and more emotional while keeping the essence of Chainsaw Man alive. So, while most parts are still the same, certain changes were made to stand out in theaters.

Manabu Otsuka Explains Why Chainsaw Man Sequel Became a Movie

Now, you might wonder why Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc was made as a film instead of another TV season. Well, MAPPA president Manabu Otsuka had a clear answer for that. Speaking at the panel (via THR), Otsuka mentioned that the team felt the Reze Arc deserved the big screen experience.

The first season of Chainsaw Man became a global hit in 2022, winning praise for its animation and storytelling. So, instead of continuing the story on television, the creators decided to make the sequel into a full theatrical release. Otsuka noted, the idea of making it a movie came from their desire to tell the next part of the story in a more powerful and emotional way.

The season one TV series of Chainsaw Man has been praised, so there was talk of making a sequel to that. We wanted to make a sequel as a film, not on TV. There were so many fans who have enjoyed it, so we felt like Chainsaw Man would be [released] as one independent film, and we felt like Sony distribution would help us, and that’s how we decided to collaborate with them.

Manabu Otsuka explained that they wanted to give fans something that would feel larger and more cinematic, something beyond what TV could offer. So, to make this possible, MAPPA decided to come up with a theatrical release, for which they teamed up with Sony for international distribution, a rare move for anime releases.

Therefore, fans everywhere will now get the chance to experience Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc on the big screen, just as the creators intended.

In Reze Arc, a completely new genre is born — love, violence, action, romance, shark. I believe it’s a film whose impact will differ depending on which character’s perspective you follow.
