The new stunning Sridevi starrer Mom which deals with a very relevant issue involving women’s safety, has been granted a ‘15’ censor certification in the UK.
That means children under 15 cannot watch the film in the UK.
Surprisingly the eagerly awaited mother-daughter drama was given a ‘UA’ in India. And we all know what the means.
The beleaguered CBFC chairperson Pahlaj Nihalani can’t stop gloating over the glaring beam of liberal light cutting through the CBFC’s staid image.
“We at the Indian censorboard are supposed to be prudes, fuddy-duddies and outdated dinosaurs. Yet we have been how important it is for children to see a film like Mom because what it tells us about the parent-child issues concerns the child as much parents. We felt Mom must be seen by children, of course accompanied by parents,” says Nihalani a tad proudly.
He also cites other recent examples of films that were denied access to children by censor boards in different parts of the world but not in India. “We here are sneered at for being Sanskari and over-conservative. But we’ve been more liberal in the censor certification of films like Befikre, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil ,Rangoon and even Baahubali than many countries abroad. But of course no one notices when we’re liberal. Labelling us primitive and over-conservative is far more fashionable than discovering that we can be more liberal than the so-called first-world countries.”
