On September 11, according to a statement released by Yu Meng Long‘s agency, the actor passed away after falling from a building on September 11, 2025. Following the police investigation, criminal suspicion has been ruled out.

Soon after, speculations about the actor’s death — involving alleged CCTV footage, videos, and audio clips —  circulated on Weibo and X, with many alleging that he had suffered abuse, his death was staged as a suicide, and the Chinese authorities were trying to suppress the matter. Netizens also noticed that Netflix quietly removed Yu Meng Long’s name from the cast of Eternal Love.

On the evening of September 16, Yu Meng Long’s mother released a statement, stating that Yu Meng Long died due to an accidental fall after drinking and that the funeral arrangements had already been completed. She said, “The authorities have already informed me of the investigation. I hope everyone can view this accident rationally and stop speculating.”

On September 21, the Chaoyang Branch of the Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau issued a police report:

Recently, Yu (male, 37) died in an accidental fall from a building after drinking. Some individuals, in order to attract attention and gain traffic, fabricated and spread false information online, spliced and concocted fake videos, and seriously disrupted public order. In response, the public security authorities, in accordance with the law, have opened a case for investigation. The situation is hereby reported as follows:

1. Case of Zheng, fabricating the rumor that “Yu jumped to his death after being lured and assaulted.”

Upon investigation, Zheng (female, 40) saw online information about Yu’s death and fabricated rumors such as: “A big shot wanted to subject him to 潜规则 [ hidden rules that sexual favours are required for entry into an occupation or for career advancement], a lackey set him up on behalf of the big shot, he was intoxicated and then assaulted, and unable to cope with it, he jumped from the building.” She posted these rumors in the comment sections of trending topics, causing a severely negative social impact.

2. Case of Yuan, fabricating the rumor that “Yu was thrown off a building.”

Upon investigation, Yuan (female, 29) fabricated and spread, through multiple online platforms, rumors such as: “Yu was hung from a tall building, had his nails plucked while conscious, his abdomen cut open, and was thrown off the building.” She sought attention without any ethical boundaries, causing psychological harm to the family and producing a severely negative social impact.

3. Case of Xu, fabricating the rumor that “Yu’s mother was being controlled.”

Upon investigation, Xu (female, 41), to create gossip, spun rumors such as, “The surveillance footage was deliberately destroyed, there are powerful forces behind this, and now Yu’s mother and younger sister are being controlled,” in the course of interactions with others. She then posted screenshots of these chats online through her personal social media account, causing a severely negative social impact.

The three individuals mentioned above have all confessed to fabricating rumors and have been subjected to measures by the public security authorities in accordance with the law. In addition, the public security authorities have taken legal action against those responsible for [spreading] the rumors, such as “Yu was pushed out of a window,” “Yu was abused before falling,” and “Yu’s mother was violently driven away by the management company.”

After the incident in which Yu accidentally fell from a building after drinking, the public security authorities immediately launched an investigation. Through on-site examination, forensic analysis, interviews, and surveillance footage, criminal suspicion was ruled out. The investigation findings have been communicated to the family, who raised no objections. Yu’s mother also released a statement through the “Yu Studio” Weibo account.

The internet is not beyond the reach of the law. We urge all netizens to refrain from creating or spreading rumors and also respect the wishes of the family, protect [their] privacy, and avoid causing secondary psychological harm to them. The public security authorities will, in accordance with the law, crack down on and handle any illegal or criminal acts of fabricating or spreading rumors.

On the evening of September 23, Weibo administrators issued an announcement:

Recently, the police released a report on the death of actor Yu Meng Long, who died after accidentally falling from a building while drunk, and took measures, in accordance with the law, against those who fabricated rumors related to his death. However, the platform has found that after the release of the police report, some users have continued to maliciously hype the matter in the comment sections, posting remarks that exploit the deceased and rule-violating content attacking the individuals involved and government accounts, thereby inciting hostility and extreme emotions online. This behavior not only shows disrespect toward the deceased and his family but also seriously disrupts public order.

In response, the platform has decided to deal with the matter strictly as follows:

As of now, in accordance with the Weibo Community Convention and other regulations, the platform has removed more than 100,000 pieces of content violating [the rules] involving malicious incitement of negative sentiment and other misconduct. Over 1,000 accounts engaged in violations have been subjected to penalties ranging from temporary suspensions to permanent closures. In addition, commenting functions have been suspended for more than 15,000 accounts that repeatedly engaged in malicious hype in the comment sections.

Yu Meng Long’s passing is deeply saddening, but the internet is not beyond the reach of the law, and tragedy must not become a tool for spreading hostility or inciting emotions. Such behavior is not only a violation of the dignity of the deceased but also a harm to the feelings of the family. At this moment, what is needed most is for the wider online community to remember the deceased with understanding and support, not to blindly believe conspiracy theories, and not to recklessly attack or hurl insults.

The platform will continue to strengthen its crackdown on the issue of maliciously stirring up negative sentiment. At the same time, we hope that the deceased may truly rest in peace and that the family may soon emerge from the shadow of this tragedy and return to a peaceful life. If users come across violating content related [to the matter], they can report it through the front-end reporting channel or to the Weibo administrators, and the platform will deal with it promptly.
