CinemaCon 2025 Live Blog: Day 3 – Amazon MGM Panel Updates

Published

on

12:50 AM – The panel ends with a sizzle reel that ended with a file that read “007: Top Secret.” While I was hoping for more James Bond news, there is still plenty to be excited about from this panel. The footage makes me even more interested in Project Hail Mary, and the premise of Mercy sounds intriguing as well. Join us for the final day of CinemaCon tomorrow as we cover the Paramount and Disney panels!

12:48 AM – While on stage with Jon Bernthal, Ben Affleck says, “It does feel great to continue the story of The Accountant…In some ways, I feel like the character never left me.”

Ben Affleck & Jon Bernthal End Up In A Shootout In The Accountant 2 Extended Teaser

We see Affleck’s Christian at a speed dating event. He talks about how he lives in an airstream, how he’s an accounted, etc. The woman on the phone calls him and tells him about potential jobs. Medina approaches him and they team together to solve a murder. Christian then brings in his brother, whom he hasn’t seen in over 8 years (approximately the same amount of time since the last film). All three of them start working the case, exploring CCTV footage, emails, etc. They discover Daniella Pineda’s Anaïs. Medina asks, “Who are these people.” Christian responds, “My people.” Throughout the rest of the teaser, Christian and his brother Braxton work together, fight people in a bar, and generally start to get along. It wraps up with them two gearing up and then engaging in a shootout in the desert. It ends with a woman on the phone, speaking in Spanish. She starts to say, “They look like…” to which Christian says, “Accountants.”

The Masters Of The Universe Movie Gets A Behind-The-Scenes Look:

A BTS clip shows He-Man’s sword, with the director talking about the toys he had as a kid. “By the power of Grayskull!” is heard in the background. We see a lot of practical effects (mixed with VFX of course), accurate costumes from the cartoon, and huge physical sets. It ends with He-Man’s hair blowing in the wind.

12:25 AM – The only update on Amazon’s plans for James Bond is “We are committed to honoring the legacy of this iconic character while bringing a fresh installment.” I was hoping for something at least a little more substantial, but at least this is a good sign that Amazon is not rushing their plans for this franchise.

12:24 AM – Mahershala Ali on his new film Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother: “I’m sorry I couldn’t stick around…but [Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother] is an intense, unique action film about a hit man who is dealing with loss and faith in the backdrop of Houston.” Mansoor notes that “It’s amusing to get an on-screen message from him when he was at Universal’s presentation just a few hours ago.”

Chris Hemsworth & Mark Ruffalo Plan A Bold Heist In Crime 101 Sneak Peek:

It begins with Hemsworth in a pent house, putting on gloves. Simultaneously, he seems to be on a date, who asks about his life. She asks if he’s ever worn cuffs, but he says not by choice. We see snippets of him robbing people, and Mark Ruffalo, presumably as a detective, investigating. After more action shots, we see Ruffalo explaining to other detectives that hundreds of robberies in the LA area have been conducted by the same guy. Then we see Hemsworth and Berry meeting each other, with him revealing what he does to her. She works for some of the people who he’s robbed. Ruffalo’s character uncovers a pattern, that Hemsworth’s robberies all occur along the 101 freeway. Together, Hemsworth and Berry’s characters plan a massive, multi-million dollar heist that they’d split. We see some of the other actors in the film, like Monica Barbaro. Towards the end of the teaser, Hemsworth pretends to be a driver and picks up Ruffalo. They have a brief discussion about classic Hollywood heist movies. They eye each other, as if they know who the other person really is. The teaser ends with Hemsworth getting into a car, saying you gotta know when to walk away.

Chris Pratt Has 90 Minutes To Save Himself From Execution In The Mercy Trailer:

The trailer begins with Chris Pratt in a chair, with Rebecca Ferguson’s character on a big screen in front of him. She explains how the Mercy program acts as judge, jury, and executioner, and that Pratt’s character is charged with the murder of his wife. He has to prove his guilt falls below the 92% threshold, or he will be executed in 90 minutes. He has to gather evidence from various sources to prove his innocence. He uses the technology to recreate the scene to try to discover who killed his wife. We see him looking through text messages, video footage, etc. In doing so, his guilt rises to 98%, which he vehemently denies. He then contacts his daughter and looks through her videos. At that point, he discovers that someone was in his house – the person who potentially killed his wife. Most of the trailer is focused on Pratt in a chair and Fergusson on a screen talking to each other about the case and his guilt. The teaser ends with the timer counting down.

Everyone Is Uncomfortable In After The Hunt Teaser Trailer:

The teaser begins with Julia Roberts, Andrew Garfield, and Ayo Edebiri arguing about their generations at a social gathering/party. “You tend to choose people because they worship you,” a voice-over says as we see Roberts and Edebiri in various scenes, with Edebiri apparently admiring her. We then see them talking in private in the dark, with Edebiri expressing concern about Garfield’s character. Something happened in Edebiri’s apartment with them two, but Garfield’s character says it’s because she has a grievance of some sort. The rest of the trailer shows things unfolding, mostly focused on Roberts’ character falling apart. It ends with her saying, “Not everything is supposed to make you comfortable.”

The First Look At Colleen Hoover’s Verity Debuts At CinemaCon:

The teaser begins with Josh Hartnett and Anne Hathaway meeting each other in a bar, and Hartnett hitting on her. She turns him down. We cut to a shot of her presumably paraplegic. We then see Anne dreaming, seeing a version of herself that’s darker and more sinister. It ends on a cop asking Dakota Johnson’s character, “Are you by any chance working on the next Verity book?” She responds, “It’ll be the best one yet.”

11:52 PM – Michael B. Jordan shares an on-screen message for The Thomas Crown Affair: “This isn’t just another remake. I’d the kind of movie that demands the big screen.”

11:33 PM – Phil Lord, Chris Miller, and Ryan Gosling are on stage now. Ryan Gosling says, “It’s an insanely ambitious story that’s massive in scope and it seemed really hard to make, and that’s kind of our bag.”

Ryan Gosling’s Project Hail Mary Footage Is Revealed:

It begins with a “knock knock” joke, then Ryan Gosling’s character Ryland Grace teaching his middle school science class. The first part of the teaser is Grace being recruited to save the world. He’s introduced to other scientists and questions them on their mission: Project Hail Mary. “It’s what you Americans will call a long shot,” says the Stratt. He responds, “Hail Mary.” We see several shots of Grace and the other scientists prepping for the mission. It culminates with Grace being recruited in the mission and complaining that he’s never done any space training. We see him on Earth and in space, with a beard after awaking on the mission. “This may be very hard for you to understand, but some people are not good at this.” The trailer ends with an AI saying, “Object approaching.” It’s Grace discovering an alien spaceship. Lots of jokes. “Anybody home?” Grace asks. Grace says into a camera, “So I met an alien.” We see a few shots of Grace in space and on Earth, mostly everyone working on the project. Gosling as Grace makes several jokes, like he does in the book.

11:26 PM – The panel begins with Project Hail Mary footage!

11:13PM, Matthew Rudoy – Next up is the Amazon MGM panel! I’m looking forward to potential updates on Project Hail Mary and Amazon’s plans for James Bond.

8:48PM – And that’s a wrap for Universal! Talk about a packed presentation. I know I’ll be eagerly counting down the minutes until that Wicked: For Good trailer arrives online. Now, it’s time to take a breather before Amazon MGM Studios kicks off their first-ever CinemaCon panel at 8:15PM PT/11:15PM ET.

UNIVERSAL UPDATE

The First Look At Wicked: For Good Flies Into CinemaCon

Easily one of the most anticipated movies of the year, Wicked: For Good reveals its first bit of footage. The full breakdown is below:

The teaser begins with Glinda running outside, and seeing glass cracking on the building. “Elphaba I know you’re out here. Just come in before the monkeys spot you.” Elphaha then appears behind her in the dark. “There’s no going back,” Elphaba says, “This is between the wizard and I.”

Fiyero now leads a squadron. “Our Wizard Lies,” Elphaba writes in the clouds as she flies in the sky. Glinda goes back to the tower/attic where she last saw Elphaba. We then see them together. Glinda leans on Elphaba’s shoulder and says, “Think of what we could do together.”

Fiyero aims a pistol at Elphaba, but quickly turns to aim at the Wizard, betraying him. “You’re the only friend I ever had,” Elphaba says. Glinda responds, “And I have so many friends.” Later… “I’m off to see the wizard,” Elphaba says as she uses her magic to pull her broom towards her, then she’s last shown flying away.

8:34PM – Universal looks to be closing out with a big one: Wicked: For Good. Stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande are present alongside director Jon M. Chu and producer Marc Platt. Teasing what’s to come, Chu says, “Our second film deals with the consequences of the decisions [the characters] made. This film brings us past the point where [Dorothy] drops in.

8:23PM – Universal starts looking further ahead to the future, to one of its most anticipated 2026 movies: Steven Spielberg’s untitled film. Details on this are slim so far, but president Jim Orr calls it “a return to form in the spirit of his monumental classics, with a propulsive, out of this world twist.”

UNIVERSAL UPDATE

M3GAN 2 & Its Spinoff SOULM8TE Take the Stage

The first teasers for both M3GAN 2 and SOULM8TE were revealed. Starting with M3GAN 2:

The teaser begins with clips from the first movie. Then we see Megan waking up in what looks like a Teletubby. Gemma says they brought her back in that body until they could trust her.

At this point, a new robot was somehow created, named Amelia, who is built using Megan’s design and apparently nothing can stop her. She’s now gone rogue and is killing everyone who was involved in her creation, which now means Gemma and Cady. Megan convinces Gemma to rebuild Megan’s original body so she can fight Amelia – even upgrading her to be stronger, faster, and taller.

At one point Megan flies using a wing suit. Lots of action scenes, and several fights between her and Amelia. Megan makes several jokes and she has multiple one-liners. “Hold on to your vaginas,” Megan says. “I’ll make you a deal. You can kill Gemma, but don’t touch Cady.”

Begins with someone delivering an adult robot to an apartment. She is then shown doing all sorts of things like cleaning, offering companionship, etc. She then tells the guy who purchased her: “I love you. Tell me you love me.” She becomes obsessed. She threatens and harms anyone who comes close to the guy who purchased her. The guy’s girlfriend tries to negotiate with her, but the robot says, “Don’t try that girl power sh*t with me,” then tries to drown her.

The First Black Phone 2 Footage Revealed

Per Mansoor, this is how The Black Phone 2 footage went down:

Teaser begins with a payphone/phone booth off the side of the road in winter. Finney is walking and sees a pay phone and stops. We then see three photos being placed on a table and then it cuts to a boy inside a basement, with someone very slowly and loudly walking down the stairs. Later, Finney answers the phone and the Grabber appears on the outside. “Hello Finney. Did you think our story was over? You of all people know that death is just a word.” Finney is shown in the phone booth a lot, with scenes of the other boy (or kids) being attacked and nearly murdered. It’s pretty much like Freddy Krueger now.

8:08PM – The Black Phone 2 is next, and according to Blum, it’s “scarier than the first one.” Coming from someone who avoided the first one because of how scary it seemed, this is both exciting and horrifying all at once.

8:00PM – Things take a decidedly scarier turn as Blumhouse takes the stage, kicking things off with the first trailer for Five Nights at Freddy’s 2. It’s quick, but plunges viewers right back into the world of Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. Jason Blum also confirmed the movie will release exclusively in theaters, unlike the first movie, which received a day-and-date Peacock release.

UNIVERSAL UPDATE

Focus Features Footage Revealed

The Focus Features preview played out with The Phoenician Scheme first:

Benicio Del Toro awakens in a field after a plane crash. We hear a voice over that talks about his crash and how it’s one of many crashes. We see several characters from the film yelling at the each other and then flipping a coin to determine heads or tails. Michael Cera appears a handful of times, possibly indicating a bigger role for him. Benedict Cumberbatch has a rather large grey beard.

We see a bunch of bees on sunflowers. Jesse Plemons provides a voice over about how important the bees are and that without the queen, the colony wastes away. It ends with Emma Stone’s character being shocked. It looks like her head was shaved or painted…?

Then, finally, Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale:

Begins on a horse track with a shot of the Crawleys. Carson announces, “Welcome to 1930.” We see Lady Mary and Edith a few times. Then one by one each of the original cast return to Downton Abbey, with Lady Mary dressed in all red. Several shots of parties and everyone celebrating. It ends with Robert placing kissing his hand and then placing it on the side of the Abbey.

7:57PM – Focus Features takes the spotlight with a preview of several of its upcoming movies, including Wes Anderson’s The Phoenician Scheme, Yorgos Lanthimos’ Bugonia, and Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale. Mansoor says they were shown back-to-back, making for a speedy but exciting preview.

7:45PM – Universal gives us back-to-back sneak peeks of two promising projects: Him and Nobody 2. The first promises a twisted take on a typical football story, with a player (played by Tyriq Withers) sustaining a head injury that soon finds him spiraling into madness. In the latter, Bob Odenkirk’s unexpected action star returns and squares off with a bunch of goons while on vacation with his family.

7:36PM – Whoa! Fresh off the extremely positive reactions to the live-action How to Train Your Dragon earlier, Universal has already greenlit a sequel, to be released on June 11, 2027. Clearly, the studio thinks they have a hit on their hands.

7:21PM – After the huge action of Jurassic World, Universal has pivoted to DreamWorks Animation, home to some of the most beloved animated franchises around. Rather than start with one of those, though, the studio has highlighted the movie they believe will kick off their next big property: Gabby’s Dollhouse, a “hybrid family adventure” building off the hit Netflix series.

UNIVERSAL UPDATE

New Jurassic World Rebirth Footage

Universal came out of the gate roaring with new footage from Jurassic World Rebirth, and it promises some classic dinosaur thrills. As Mansoor reports:

Begins with an alarm going off in the lab, with someone getting stuck inside a chamber with one of the mutant dinosaurs (the red room we see in the marketing materials). “In the island we’re heading to, two dozen species have survived there alone.” A T-rex is walking into water, chasing a group of people on a dinghy. Lots of shots from scenes shown in the trailer. “Survival is a long shot,” says Jonathan Bailey’s character. As they’re trying to escape the island on a boat, the mososaurus finds them and attacks. There are several scenes reminiscent of the old films, including one scene in which Johansson lures a raptor-like dinosaur away from the others, running towards a Jeep — similar to what Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum) does in The Lost World.

7:12PM – First movie up is Jurassic World Rebirth, with director Gareth Edwards and stars Scarlett Johansson and Mahershala Ali present. On the subject of joining the beloved franchise, Johansson, who has long wanted to be in a Jurassic movie, says, “This time I went to Steven Spielberg directly and told him I’ll play any role, even if I was eaten in the first five minutes. So it’s an incredible honor to be here with Jurassic [World].” With this one, “We wanted to put the scares back into Jurassic.”

6:59PM – Per Mansoor, the opening played out like so:

It began with the Universal logo, then Back to the Future, Jurassic Park, How To Train Your Dragon, Psycho, Jaws, Fast & Furious, Despicable Me, Shrek, Conclave, Oppenheimer, E.T., and Wicked.

6:50PM – It’s time! The Universal/Focus Features presentation is beginning, and our on-the-ground reporter Mansoor Mithaiwala is seated. The event kicks off with an orchestral performance of various Universal scores. Jurassic Park, anybody?

6:00PM – We’ve got about 45 minutes to go before the Universal/Focus Features presentation! I’m looking forward to learning new details about the upcoming Downton Abbey movie and hopefully getting a peek at Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. There’s also this summer’s Jurassic World Rebirth, which arrived at CinemaCon with this awesome standee:

4:35PM – As a big fan of the original animated movies, I’ve been apprehensive about the How to Train Your Dragon remake, but these early reactions certainly are promising. I highly recommend giving them a read while waiting for the Universal panel in a couple hours!

3:16PM – The consensus is in: How to Train Your Dragon is a hit! The upcoming live-action remake of the beloved animated franchise is drawing some glowing reactions on social media, with critic Scott Menzel calling it “a must see on the big screen” and ScreenRant‘s own Tessa Smith praising how it “has all the charm of the original enhanced into something I never thought it could accomplish.”

2:57PM ET – Hello, everyone! Welcome to Day 3 of CinemaCon. News Editor Rachel LaBonte here and ready for more movie excitement. Most of the presentations are taking place later today, but we do have something to discuss already: The first reactions to How to Train Your Dragon! They’re pouring in now, let’s see what people have to say about this divisive live-action remake.

ScreenRant is coming to you live from CinemaCon! This annual convention for the movie theater industry is a key event for Hollywood – it’s become the place for any studio releasing movies in cinemas to present their upcoming slate, and is often where posters, trailers, and footage for hotly anticipated titles are revealed for the first time.

This year’s edition, held at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, from Monday, March 31 to Thursday, April 3, could be especially big. After the one-two punch of the pandemic and 2023’s Hollywood strikes sparked the “survive ’til 2025” mantra, theater owners need to see the film industry deliver some big hits. And the major studios will be eager to prove their 2025 slates have what it takes to revive a box office that has struggled so far this year.

Today is Day 3 of CinemaCon, and the big ticket items on the schedule are presentations by Universal and Focus Features from 3:45-5:30pm local time (6:45-8:30pm ET) and Amazon MGM from 8:15-10pm local time (11:15pm-1am ET). However, ahead of both is the first screening of the live-action How to Train Your Dragon, one of the year’s most high-profile releases. Watch this space for the first reactions from that, as well as SR‘s other live coverage from the ground!
