Clark Gregg Reveals the Real Reason Marvel Was Forced to Revive Agent Coulson

Becoming one of the most integral characters of the MCU with his own spin-off show titled Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (which also happened to be the first ever Marvel TV show), Clark Gregg had a fabulous time as Agent Phil Coulson.

In an interview with GeekWire, the actor revealed that the reason Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. was created was due to some intense backlash that Marvel received for killing him off in the 2011 film, The Avengers.

The social media outcry at the demise of Agent Coulson after the first Avengers movie seemed to contribute to the wind behind the idea of bringing him back to life.

To bring back Coulson, fans took to X, and the hashtag #CoulsonLives became trending, which gave the possibility of an idea of where Clark Gregg’s Phil Coulson lives.

This wouldn’t have happened if Gregg’s Phil Coulson hadn’t stolen MCU’s thunder with his iconic persona and deadpan comedy.

Clark Gregg’s Agent Coulson Stole the MCU Thunder

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there were supersoldiers, tech-billionaires, kings, assassins, and more. Despite it all, Clark Gregg’s Agent Phil Coulson managed to shine above them all because he was just an agent working for SHIELD.

From his appearance in Iron Man to his death in The Avengers and a prequel scene in Captain Marvel, Phil Coulson became a fan favourite for the world. From his deadpan looks to being the comic relief through intense moments, Clark Gregg really put the spotlight on Phil Coulson.

The backlash against Coulson’s killing was unprecedented since people hadn’t realised that Clark Gregg had quietly stolen the MCU’s thunder. Naturally, Marvel decided to give Agent Coulson his own show titled Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., which ran for a total of 7 seasons!

Lucky for fans who have loved the character, Clark Gregg mentioned in the Love in the Time of Hydra: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Podcast that there is a possibility for the return of Phil Coulson to the MCU.

According to Gregg, the MCU was tinkering with the concepts of Multiverse, and in Multiversal theory, there are infinite universes where Agent Phil Coulson hasn’t died.

[Coulson isn’t dead] in every timeline! Look, you are playing in a multiverse scenario in various timelines without you being like, ‘I don’t know, there are many multiverses here.’

He continued,

People are very upset about whether things are canon [or not], and I love that Kevin [Feige] is [like] The Oz.

With high anticipation and expectations, fans are hoping against all odds for the return of their beloved character. It’s up to The OZ (as Clark Gregg said) to decide whether or not to bring Phil Coulson back.
