'Countdown' Creator Explains How Episode 10 Just Reset the Clock With That Insane Time Jump

In Countdown Season 1, Episode 10, “The Muzzle Pile,” Team Hurricane finally comes face to face with their target, Volchek (Bogdan Yasinski). They neutralize the threat, and in less than half the episode, the team is disbanded and everyone moves on. A ten-month time jump finds them back together working on a new case, and it feels like the show has moved on to a second-season plotline. Series creator Derek Haas discussed this time jump in a new interview and revealed that indeed, the team was on to a new case. “When they [Amazon] told me it was going to be 13 episodes, I thought, ‘That’s a really long stretch for one case,’” he said of why he decided to end the Volchek story at that point and pivot. “And then I thought, ‘How interesting and novel would it be if I started a second case within the first season?’” Haas added.

The move was surprising, which is precisely what the showrunner aimed for. Rarely do shows pick up a fresh arc before the season finale. “That way, the audience can’t settle into the rhythm that they’re used to, which is, ‘I know that the case is still going and can’t possibly wrap up because [Episode] 13 is weeks away. I want you on your toes.’” Haas said. “The last thing we control as writers is surprise, and if you can surprise the audience, they’re going to want to keep coming back.”

What To Expect In the Next Episode of ‘Countdown?’

As the team dives into the case, they make several discoveries that could help them catch the person trying to assassinate government officials. “Shepherd works to decipher the manifesto recovered in Cabin 6 while the rest of the team pursues the suspect on the run,” teases the logline for Countdown Season 1, Episode 11, “Run.” The showrunner also addressed the future of the missing team member from the previous task force, Detective Oliveras (Jessica Camacho). He confirmed that she would return but was not specific when. And for fans of Meachum (Jensen Ackles) and Oliveras, there is a treat waiting. “I don’t want to spoil it, but you are going to see more scenes with Oliveras and Meachum before the end of this season,” the showrunner shared. “It was fun to write for them — and it gets even more explosive we as we go,” he added.
