'Dark Winds' Faces a Major Setback on Streaming as a New Series Dominates Charts

AMC+’s breakout hit Dark Winds is finally showing cracks in its once-unshakable dominance on streaming. After spending more than six months as a fixture in the streamer’s top 10, the series has now slipped to the 10th spot. While still hanging onto the charts, the series finds itself in dangerous territory as heavyweight contenders like The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon and The Walking Dead: Dead City circle with the potential to push it out entirely from the AMC+ U.S. top 10 rankings. Created by Graham Roland and adapted from Tony Hillerman’s Leaphorn & Chee novels, Dark Winds has been one of AMC+’s crown jewels since its 2022 debut. Set in the 1970s American Southwest, the series follows Navajo police officers Joe Leaphorn (Zahn McClarnon) and Jim Chee (Kiowa Gordon) as they navigate crimes intertwined with Native American traditions and their own personal traumas. The show has quickly elevated from a niche adaptation to a fan-favorite.

With the longest run of all the shows in the top ten, Dark Winds has had an unbroken run of more than 178 days, with the closest contender in terms of staying power being The Walking Dead: Dead City at over 126 days, now in 5th place. However, AMC+’s library is evolving, and with The Walking Dead spin-offs breathing new life into a franchise many thought was running on fumes, Dark Winds suddenly looks less untouchable. The timing of this downturn couldn’t be more telling. The third season of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon has shot up to number one on the charts in a few days. Both spin-offs carry the weight of a dedicated fan base, and the action-driven sequences often edge out slower, more contemplative dramas when attention spans are split across platforms. The Walking Dead: Dead City has solidified its standing with a gritty Manhattan setting and the fan-favorite pairing of Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan).

What Other Shows Are Doing Well on AMC+?

While Dark Winds clings to its top 10 spot, other titles on AMC+ are thriving. Unsurprisingly, The Walking Dead spin-offs are at the center of the action, but they’re not the only players making noise. Action juggernaut John Wick: Chapter 4 has stormed into the rankings at No. 8, proving Keanu Reeves’ bullet-slinging appeal extends well beyond its theatrical run. Even more surprising is the horror sleeper hit The Twin, starring Logan Donovan, Robert Longstreet, and Aleksa Palladino, which has surged to No. 3, outperforming even some of the streamer’s more established IP.
