Competition of Box Office Collections: Infinity Castle vs Mugen Train

Infinity Castle has had an explosive performance in each and every category. It has surpassed all the domestic records set by Demon Slayer: Mugen Train. Within the first four days, the film grossed over ¥7.31 billion ($49.7 million), breaking multiple records set by its predecessor.

Infinity Castle now holds the spot for the highest opening day and single-day gross in Japanese cinema. Its opening weekend alone earned about ¥5.52 billion ($37.5 million), surpassing Mugen Train, which earned ¥4.62 billion ($31.4 million) in its first three days.

Milestone Mugen Train Infinity Castle
Opening Day (Japan) ¥1.2 billion ($8.1 million) ¥1.64 billion ($11.2 million)
Opening Weekend (3-day) ¥4.62 billion ($31.4 million) ¥5.52 billion ($37.5 million)
Total Domestic (after 38 days) ¥25.9 billion ($176 million) ¥28.09 billion ($191 million)
Korea Opening Weekend $1.3 million (5 days) $13 million (3 days)
Worldwide Total $507 million $261 million and counting

The domestic earnings of Infinity Castle on the 38th day are at a whopping $191 million, surpassing Mugen Train’s peak collection by a whole $15 million.

Can Infinity Castle Surpass the Records Set by Mugen Train?

Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle can definitely surpass the records set by Mugen Train, as it has been doing since its release. The domestic performance is a key indicator in the battle between the two movies; the real battle for the box office crown will be decided on the global stage.

Mugen Train‘s success was heavily reliant on its Japanese box office, with its international run arriving much later. Infinity Castle, however, is enjoying an explosive international run, although only seven other Asian countries have had a theatrical release, the movie is setting new benchmarks for animated films in the overseas circuit.

In Korea alone, it raked in much higher earnings than Mugen Train, with a three-day opening weekend of $13 million as opposed to its predecessor’s five-day opening of $1.3 million. The film’s record-breaking pre-sales in North America, amounting to approximately $10 million, show a lot of promise.

In the end, Mugen Train has set high standards with $507 million worldwide collections (reported via The Numbers), but then again, Infinity Castle is halfway there already. The franchise is increasing its fame while anime is permeating more and more into the international market. It is very likely that Infinity Castle will surpass the earnings of its predecessor and set new records.

Demon Slayer Infinity Castle is set to release in the US on September 12, 2025.
