Denzel Washington’s next movie with Spike Lee is gearing up to begin its theatrical run, but ahead of its arrival in theaters, one of Washington’s films, which is more than 10 years old, has become a streaming success. Washington stars alongside Mark Wahlberg in 2 Guns, the buddy cop film following two hardened criminals who get into trouble with border patrol after meeting with a Mexican drug lord. 2 Guns is currently streaming on Tubi in America and on Starz globally, where it’s become one of the top 10 movies for the streamer in recent days. The film earned average scores of 64% from critics and 66% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, and it grossed $131 million at the global box office against a reported budget of $61 million, making it a solid financial success.
Based on the popular Boom! Studios comic book from Steven Grant, Blake Masters wrote the script for 2 Guns, and Baltasar Kormákur directed the film. Kormákur is also known for his work on Beast, the 2022 Idris Elba-led survival thriller that’s currently streaming on Peacock. Percy Jackson’s Leah Sava Jeffries also stars in the film. This was the first time Washington starred in a comic book movie, but it won’t be the last. Washington has been confirmed to have a role in Black Panther 3, the third installment in Ryan Coogler’s Marvel trilogy that’s likely not going to be released anytime in the next two years. It’s unclear who Washington is going to play in Black Panther 3, but his MCU debut comes after years of fan desire to see him join the franchise.

Over on Apple TV+, Denzel Washington has The Tragedy of Macbeth trending for the streamer. Released in 2021, Washington called the film his “most mature work.” He was nominated for an Oscar for his performance in The Tragedy of Macbeth, but the award ultimately went to Will Smith. On Netflix, Washington’s American Gangster recently found a run of streaming success before departing the top 10. The film also stars Russell Crowe, and it tells the story of real American drug kingpin Frank Lucas and his rise to power in 1970s Harlem.
