More than halfway into Dexter: Resurrection, the sequel series has exceeded the expectations of critics and fans alike. However, there is already one glaring flaw in the third Dexter spinoff series that future episodes would do well to repair.
Bringing back David Zayas as Angel Batista of Miami Metro Homicide in Dexter: New Blood was a fantastic creative decision, even though Zayas was only featured in a few scenes. He has thankfully taken on a much larger and more crucial role in Dexter: Resurrection, but is unfortunately going after Dexter alone without the help of a few other OG characters that would have absolutely helped him, had he asked.
Quinn & Masuka Made Cameos But Should Be Helping Batista Track Down Dexter
Joey Quinn (played by Desmond Harrington) and Vince Masuka (played by C.S. Lee) briefly returned in Dexter: Resurrection season 1, episode 3, “Backseat Driver.” They arrive to wish Batista a fond farewell at a Miami bar after finding out that he was retiring to handle some unfinished business.
Rather than digging into Batista’s objective, Quinn and Masuka somewhat disappointingly accept Batista’s decision a bit too easily. I feel like Quinn from the OG series would have questioned Batista’s decision further, which could have gotten him more involved in trying to reveal Dexter as the Bay Harbor Butcher. Masuka could have just tagged along for his signature punchlines and iconic laugh.
Let’s be honest, most Dexter fans would have gladly watched the Miami Metro trio of Batista, Quinn, and Masuka in their own spinoff series. While Resurrection has been exceptional thus far, it would have been great to see Quinn and Masuka assist Batista on this, especially since it would have been personal for all three of them.
Quinn Could Have Sought Revenge Against Dexter For What Happened To Deb
If Batista had told Quinn at the bar in Miami about Dexter likely being the Bay Harbor Butcher, I’m confident Quinn would have dropped everything to help Batista get to the bottom of it. Since Deb was the love of his life, Quinn would have had, at the very least, some questions for Dexter, such as why he took her off life support in the OG series finale.
Quinn might have also connected some dots between Deb and Dexter’s dynamic, which may have ultimately led him to blame Dexter for Deb’s downward spiral and ultimate death. Batista certainly has unfinished business with LaGuerta, but Quinn has just as much with Deb.
As for Masuka, he could certainly feel betrayed that his closest work associate for decades (dating back to the Original Sin days) turned out to be an infamous serial killer. Hopefully, Dexter: Resurrection finds a way to bring these OG characters back around before the season 1 finale.
