It seems providential to me that Dia Mirza got married during the same week that Madhavan received his doctorate. They both made their debut together 20 years ago in Rehna Hai Terre DilMein. A film that I was instrumental in getting released in Bihar, though I wonder if producer Vashu Bhagnani would like to remember my contribution.
I’ve known Maddy and Dia since then, one of them much more closely than the other. But then Dia Mirza is not the sort who would opt for boisterous friendships. She is very private and a highly reserved human being. Madhavan is something else.
They both tell me this is the happiest moment of their life. I believe them.Sometimes one comes across people who deserve all the happiness in the world. Diya Mirza is one of them. Unlike others of her ilk(and I mean showbiz) she has never allowed success or failure to rule and define her relationships.Dia makes friends for life. We’ve known each other for more years that I can count.
I still remember when she made her Bollywood debut. Audiences immediately saw her for what she was: pretty and pristine. She was never the wet-dream girl, never the kind to awaken dirty thoughts in the viewers’ heads. She was more Hema Malini than Zeenat Aman.
She has always been proper in her behavior and pronouncements. If I’ve to see an opposite it would have to be Kangana Ranaut who doesn’t believe in filters. Dia Mirza’s life is seen through filtered lenses. She lives in an invisible impregnable castle where none of the human foibles and filth are welcome.
I believe she deserves more as an actor than the film industry is willing to give her. Bollywood, as we know it, is not so generous to those who are as transparent as Dia is. You would never see her on backslapping terms with her co-stars, never see her sucking up to producers for roles, never see her pretending to be nice to people she doesn’t like.
I don’t want to call her a misfit in masala kingdom. But that’s what she is. Her marriage, her second to Vaibhav Rekhi comes with a built-in child. I am sure Dia will make a wonderful mother to her husband’s daughter. I am sure all her friends feel the same way. There can be no dispute over Dia Mirza’s goodheartedness. Dia Mirza was born a mother.
